Independence looks different for everyone, but the goal remains the same: living an autonomous, empowered life. Research shows that self-determination is directly linked to higher levels of happiness and community participation.

Our team at DDRC has put together a guide on building skills for success, covering everything from household management and travel training to financial literacy and self-advocacy.

Whether you're a caregiver, a family member, or a provider, these real-world activities are designed to support individuals as they reach for their goals.

Last week, we had a watch party to celebrate the 2026 Alliance’s Direct Support Professional (DSP) of the Year nominees. We lost power at the Walter’s facility, but made due and a good time was had by all! 🤩

This year our own Rick Lovato from Therapeutic Recreation is a finalist for Alliance’s Direct Support Professional (DSP) of the Year! Over the course of 35 years, Rick has dedicated himself to supporting individuals with IDD and, in doing so, has transformed not only individual lives but the broader community’s understanding of inclusion. The 2026 winner of this statewide honor will be announced during a luncheon on IDD Awareness Day at the Capitol on March 3rd. We also nominated Ryan Monroe from Adult Vocational Services. Ryan consistently demonstrates creativity, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to enriching the lives of the people he supports. Although he is not a finalist, he will be recognized at the luncheon. Congratulations to both Rick and Ryan, you are both DSPs of the year in our book! ❤️

Traditional job searches don't always show what a person is truly capable of. If you or someone you know has struggled to find the right fit, DDRC’s Customized Employment program offers a different path.

We don't ask you to fit into a pre-existing job description. Instead, our certified specialists focus on your unique strengths and interests, partner directly with employers to identify real business needs, and create roles that work for you and the employer.

We believe everyone can work. Let’s focus on what’s possible!

Our staff at the Walters facility have been working extra hard lately—not just in their daily care for others, but in their own professional growth! We are so proud of these dedicated individuals for earning their NADSP E-Badges.

A huge round of applause for:
Pilar Puentes, Van Pham, and Lorraine Martinez (DSP-1)
Beth Roberts and Marc Lagae (DSP-2)
Amanda Romero and Melissa DePriest (DSP-3)

Your dedication makes a world of difference in the lives of the individuals and families we serve every day. We are so lucky to have you on the DDRC team! ❤️
