As the weather is changing and many cold days are approaching☃️, our wardrobes are changing too🧣.

The adjustment to the new clothing items is expected to be difficult for all sensory children, specifically those with Autism.

If your child responds to visual cues, a choice board may help him out with the transition.

Firstly, depict for your child that the summer clothing is no longer available to them, by showing them a picture of summer clothing👕, marked with an "X".

Once that has been established, offer him choices of warm-weather clothing by placing photos of his sweaters🧥 on one side of a choice board and his pants👖 on the other.

Allow him to choose one of each for the day. Remember to only place the ones that can match up together.

Be sure to applaud each small accomplishment!

After hearing so much talk about ABA Therapy, you may still be wondering "what is ABA therapy"?

The goal of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Therapy is to observe behavior, teach new social skills, and decrease problem behavior in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Young children are often treated with ABA Therapy as part of their early intervention. The benefits of ABA Therapy can also extend to older children and adults on the autism spectrum, although treatment options for them are often limited.

What ABA therapy aims to achieve:

🎈Developing critical life skills
🎈Instilling positive behavior alternatives
🎈Nurturing inherent strengths
🎈Improving social, communication, and language skills

Are you struggling to introduce your child with autism to new foods?

You are not alone.
But, just because it is common, it doesn’t make it easier.

Try these ideas for a more pleasant mealtime experience:

🍽️Allow your child to feel in control over what he eats and understand that he may not like some foods. Offer a broad variety of food choices in order to help him feel comfortable.

🥪Playing with new food is an excellent way to introduce them to autistic children since it decreases mealtime anxiety and increases familiarity. Use cookie cutter shapes for sandwiches or make funny faces with pasta!

🔪Because your child may be hypersensitive to textures, keep in mind that it might be how the food feels in his mouth that results in an aversion to the food. Try blending or chopping these foods to help smooth out the texture.

😌Remember to try your best to be patient as your child samples and explores new foods- it may take many tries and that is normal.

The assessor will then develop an individualized treatment plan that includes behavioral strategies and skill mastery goals.

Grocery shopping with children can always be challenging.
For a parent of a child with autism, the challenge can be even greater with all the sensory stimuli a grocery store offers.

Try some of these tips to make your shopping experience more productive and tolerable for all.

🛒Children with autism can cope with potentially stressful situations better when they know what they can expect.
Give notice about the upcoming grocery trip- even an hour ahead can help them mentally prepare.

🛒Tell the child what will happen on the trip (like parking the car, getting a shopping cart, finding the items on the list, etc.) and what expectations you have of them (like holding onto the cart and walking together).

🛒Don’t forget to reward positive behavior with verbal praise or small physical rewards.

🛒Start off with short trips together. As your child learns to manage them, you can slowly lengthen them. Make sure your child has a way of communicating when the child begins to feel overwhelmed, and give them a break when needed.

Enjoy your shopping experience together!😊
