Early Alert: Glucose Monitor Sensor Issue from Abbott Diabetes Care
The FDA is aware that Abbott Diabetes Care has sent all affected customers a letter regarding an issue with certain FreeStyle Libre 3 and FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus sensors providing incorrect low glucose readings. If undetected, incorrect low glucose readings over an extended period may lead to wrong treatment decisions for people living with diabetes, such as excessive carbohydrate intake or skipping or delaying insulin doses. These decisions may pose serious health risks, including potential injury or death, or other less serious complications.
As of November 14, 2025, Abbott has reported 736 serious injuries, and seven deaths associated with this issue.

Time to do some catching up! Congratulations to The Verona Tavern and Kulm Civic Improvement! These two local watering holes were the winners of the most scans for September and October, respectively, and they each got prizes for scanning the most IDs in that month :) Great job!
Thank you to our local retailers for helping to keep alcohol out of the hands of minors and responsibly serving those over 21!
(The November winner will be revealed in a few weeks! 🤩)

Teens will often seek out something predictable from their childhood when life feels overwhelming. Bingeing an old tv series or reading books from their youth is a sign that they have found a healthy way to cope.
When we learn how to cope, we are less likely to numb, whether through substances or other risky behaviors. Give your kids space to cope - maybe even try one of their good ideas.

Parents! We need to be the experts in the room -- Learn about e-cigarettes, their risks, and the ways they are marketed to youth. Keep up with trends in va**ng products, as new devices and flavors are constantly emerging.
Then, use your information: Have open conversations with your child about va**ng early and often. Ask open-ended questions to understand their perspective without judgment. Explain the health risks in a way they can relate to, like how va**ng can impact sports performance or concentration at school.

Food Safety
Foodborne illnesses are more common than one may think. Roughly one in six Americans become ill due to foodborne diseases each year. Below are tips on how to safely prepare and handle food to enjoy a healthy holiday:
• Wash hands thoroughly. Be sure to use soap and clean, running water for at least 20 seconds before, during and after preparing food, as well as before eating. Dry hands with a clean towel.
• Clean surfaces and utensils. This includes cleaning cutting boards, dishes and countertops with hot, soapy water, especially after they have come into contact with raw meat, poultry, seafood or eggs.
• Thaw turkey safely. Turkeys can be thawed in the refrigerator, in a sink of cold water if the water is changed every 30 minutes or in the microwave. No foods should thaw on the counter. Find safe thawing tips for different sized turkeys at www.fsis.usda.gov/food-safety/safe-food-handling-and-preparation/poultry/turkey-basics-safe-thawing.
• Prevent cross-contamination of foods. Keep raw meat, poultry, seafood, eggs and other food from coming into contact with each other.
• Cook food thoroughly. Check food with a food thermometer. A turkey should be cooked to at least 165° F and leftovers should be reheated to the same temperature. See a safe minimum internal temperature guide for various foods at www.foodsafety.gov/food-safety-charts/safe-minimum-internal-temperatures.
• Refrigerate leftovers within two hours. Learn more at www.fsis.usda.gov/food-safety/safe-food-handling-and-preparation/food-safety-basics.
More food safety and foodborne illness information is available on the HHS Foodborne and Gastrointestinal Illness webpage.

Sports are so much more than competition, talent, or even community. Sports, and all other kinds of movement, are a way to process emotional energy that you don’t know how to get out. This is healthy coping! When we learn how to cope, we are less likely to numb, whether through substances or other risky behaviors. Give your kids space to cope - maybe even try one of their good ideas.

Synthetic opioids like fentanyl contribute to nearly 70% of overdose deaths. Even in extremely small doses, it can be deadly. Fentanyl overdoses have continued to rise because drug dealers often lace pills with fentanyl to increase potency, and it is impossible to see it, taste it, or smell it.
Learn more about the dangers of fentanyl, and have your own free naloxone on hand in case of an accidental overdose by messaging LaMoure County Public Health today.
