“As deeply committed yoga teachers and practitioners across traditions, we speak now in the face of injustice, violence, dishonesty, and abuse of power. Our role is to renounce indifference, fear, and ego so that wise action and compassionate response may arise.
In the United States, immigration enforcement practices are escalating and causing profound and indiscriminate harm. Families are being separated, people detained without due process, communities live in fear, and lives have been lost.
These actions deepen suffering and stand in direct contradiction to the moral and ethical principles of yoga.
The foundational text of classical yoga, the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali, places ahimsă, non-harm, at the heart of daily practice. The Bhagavad Gitā teaches that yoga is skill in action. These teachings call us to protect life and dignity wherever they are threatened.
We affirm the rule of law while inviting all parties to engage humanely and with care for our fellow human beings. Enforcement that is cruel, dehumanizing, or indiscriminate violates ethical and spiritual principles as well as the law. Every life matters, and our liberation is bound together.”
