One thing I love about Wing Chun is that it is about being human. It is not superhuman! Superhuman isn't a thing. It's a thing we want. It's a thing we chase.

Being human is the "super" thing!

We love to hold the Grandmasters in high regard. How wonderfully so. Yet, they show us the path toward being human.

On any normal day in Hong Kong, I'll walk with one and yet the world all around will have no clue.

Enjoy this blog. Perhaps it will help us see more clearly.

🧠 The rat experiment that changed the way we understand hope

In 1950, psychologist Curt Richter conducted a disturbing experiment that, decades later, is still quoted when talking about the strength of hope.

He took a group of rats and placed them inside large glass bowls full of water. The walls were flat, too high to climb and nowhere to lean on.

The rats could only do one thing: swim.

Researchers observed how long they endured before surrendering due to exhaustion.

The result was surprising

On average, they stopped fighting after about 15 minutes.

Fifteen minutes of struggle.. and then they just gave up.

But then Richter decided to do something different.

In a second experiment, just before the rats drowned, the researchers pulled them out of the water, dried them, and let them rest for a few minutes.

Afterwards... they put them back in the water.

Now comes the awesome part.

How long do you think they lasted the second time around?

Another 15 mins ????

10 minutes?

5 minutes?

No.

Some swam up to 60 hours.

Yes, hours.

There was even one that lasted 81 hours.

That's 240 times longer than on the first try.

What has changed?.

Not his strength.

Not his physical stamina.

Not the water.

The only thing that changed was an idea in her mind:

the possibility of being rescued.

After being rescued once, the rats kept swimming much longer because, somehow, they hoped to be rescued again.

💡 The lesson is powerful.

Humans don't give up just because of tiredness.

They often give up when they lose hope.

When someone thinks there's no way out... gives up quickly.

But when there is a small possibility, a sign, a word of encouragement, or a reason to keep going...

human resistance can become extraordinary.

Sometimes all it takes for a person to keep fighting is to know that they are not alone in the water.

Because hope-how small-can make someone swim much farther than they ever imagined. ✨
