I’ve been getting a lot of questions about the sheepskins that many students use in class, so I wanted to share a little about why they are such a special part of Kundalini Yoga.
In this practice, the sheepskin is more than just a mat. It represents your sacred space. Traditionally, yogis have used sheepskins for centuries to create an energetic boundary between the body and the magnetic pull of the Earth. It helps protect your auric field, supports the natural flow of prana, and allows you to hold the vibration of your practice more clearly.
The natural fibers of wool help regulate temperature and bring comfort during meditation and long seated kriyas. There is also a grounding yet elevating energy that comes from practicing on something natural, a reminder of the connection between heaven and earth.
Using a sheepskin is a way to honor the lineage of Kundalini Yoga and the sacredness of your practice. Of course, you can also use a faux sheepskin or another natural material that feels aligned for you. What matters most is that it helps you feel supported, connected, and at peace.
When you sit on your sheepskin, you’re not just preparing to move or meditate. You’re entering your sacred space.
