Hearing from our patients and caregivers about how much they want to show their support for LCC, we’ve created an online portal where anyone can purchase branded wearable merchandise. $3 dollars from every item purchased supports the Healing Journey Foundation, whose mission is to offer free programs and advocacy to empower cancer patients and their families across Lancaster County.

Mineral sunscreen, also known as physical sunscreen, creates a physical barrier on the skin’s surface and protects the skin by deflecting the sun’s UV rays. Chemical sunscreen layers onto the skin and helps to protect the skin by absorbing UV rays as opposed to deflecting them. Chemical sunscreen is the most popular form of sunscreen.

Both mineral and chemical sunscreens are effective at protecting skin from the sun. Here are some unique qualities to each that may influence which you’d prefer for your skin’s needs:

Mineral Sunscreen: Often considered more suitable for sensitive skin. Mineral filters are also not very reactive and are less likely to cause discomfort.

Chemical Sunscreen: Easy to apply and blend – chemical sunscreens often have a lighter formula that won’t leave a white film on the skin, as opposed to some thicker mineral sunscreens.

When you have cancer, avoid cleaning supplies containing volatile organic compounds (VOCs), ammonia, chlorine bleach, synthetic fragrances, and dyes, as these can release toxic fumes. Prioritize products that are fragrance-free or plant-based, and ensure good ventilation by opening windows to reduce exposure to benzene and formaldehyde.

Key cleaning products to avoid or replace include:
Aerosol Sprays:

- Air fresheners, disinfectant sprays, and furniture polish that release strong, lingering VOCs.

- Oven Cleaners & Degreasers: These often contain harsh, caustic chemicals.

- Dry Cleaning Chemicals: Avoid clothing dry-cleaned with perchloroethylene (PCE).

- Carpet/Upholstery Cleaners: Frequently contain toxic solvents.

- Conventional Cleaners: Many dishwashing liquids and detergents contain harsh ingredients

Safer Alternatives and Tips:

- Natural Cleaners: Use vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice to clean and disinfect surfaces.
Ventilation: Open windows or run fans while cleaning to reduce fumes.

- Protection: Wear gloves while cleaning to prevent skin contact with chemical residues.

- Look for Labels: Choose products certified by reputable environmental or health organizations.

- DIY Alternatives: Use this guide on toxic ingredients for simple recipes using ingredients like vinegar and tea tree oil.

MECHANICSBURG — Conestoga Valley’s Brylee Miller hadn’t caught her breath. But even the panting and gasps for air that surface following a 100-meter dash were put on pause.
