Key Reasons for Spring Mosquito Activity:

Temperature Rise: Mosquitoes become active when temperatures consistently rise above 50°F, and dormant eggs hatch with spring rain.

Water Sources: Spring rains create puddles, while gutters and yard containers catch water, providing ideal, small-volume breeding sites.

How to Reduce Mosquitoes This Spring:

"Tip and Toss": Empty standing water from birdbaths, planters, tires, and toys weekly.

Clean Gutters: Clear debris to prevent water from pooling in gutters.

Protect Yourself: Use insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.

Improve Drainage: Fill in low-lying spots in your yard that hold water.

Causes and Timing
Tree Pollen: The primary culprit in early spring (maple, oak, birch, cedar).
Grass Pollen: Becomes common in late spring and summer.
Mold: Rainy weather can increase mold spores.

Management and Treatment
Start Early: Begin taking allergy medication 2 weeks before the season starts.
Medications: Oral antihistamines, decongestants, and nasal corticosteroid sprays are effective.
Avoidance: Check pollen counts, keep windows closed, and use HEPA filters.
Hygiene: Wash clothes and shower after being outside to remove pollen, and wash pet bedding frequently.
Long-Term Relief: For severe cases, consider allergy shots (immunotherapy) to build tolerance.
