Upper Crossed Syndrome (UCS) is a common postural imbalance seen especially in people who sit long hours (computer work, mobile use). It involves tightness of some upper-body muscles and weakness of others, forming a cross pattern of muscle imbalance.

💠1. Upper Crossed Syndrome is a muscle imbalance pattern affecting the neck, shoulders, and upper back, characterized by:

👉Tight/overactive muscles
👉Weak/inhibited muscle
👉This imbalance leads to forward head posture, rounded shoulders, and thoracic kyphosis.

💠2. Muscular Imbalance Pattern

➡️Tight / Overactive Muscles
1. Upper trapezius
2. Levator scapulae
3. Pectoralis major
4. Pectoralis minor
5. Sternocleidomastoid (SCM)

➡️Weak / Inhibited Muscles
1. Deep neck flexors
2. Lower trapezius
3. Middle trapezius
4. Rhomboids
5. Serratus anterior

👉These muscles create a cross pattern:

💠Tight upper trapezius & levator scapulae
Tight pectorals Crossing with Weak deep neck flexors, Weak middle/lower trapezius & rhomboids

3. Causes
👉Prolonged computer or laptop work
👉Excessive mobile phone use (text neck) 📱
👉Poor sitting posture
👉Weak back muscles
👉Lack of exercise
👉Improper workstation ergonomics

4. Clinical Features
👉Patients may present with:
👉Forward head posture
👉Rounded shoulders
👉Increased thoracic kyphosis
👉Neck pain
👉Shoulder pain
👉Headaches
👉Reduced cervical mobility
👉Scapular dyskinesis

Strengthen Weak Muscles
👉Chin tuck exercise
👉Scapular retraction
👉Wall angels
👉Prone Y and T exercises
👉Serratus anterior strengthening
👉Postural Correction
👉Ergonomic workstation setup
👉Avoid prolonged mobile use
👉Frequent posture breaks

8. Complications
If untreated, it may lead to:
❌Chronic neck pain
❌Shoulder impingement
❌Cervicogenic headache
❌Reduced shoulder mobility

💪 Rotator Cuff (Shoulder Joint)

The Rotator Cuff is a group of four muscles and their tendons that surround the shoulder joint and help stabilize the head of the humerus in the glenoid cavity of the scapula.

🦴 Muscles of Rotator Cuff

These four muscles are commonly remembered by the word “SITS”:

1️⃣ Supraspinatus – Helps in initiation of shoulder abduction (first 15°)
2️⃣ Infraspinatus – Responsible for external rotation of the shoulder
3️⃣ Teres Minor – Assists in external rotation and stabilization
4️⃣ Subscapularis – Responsible for internal rotation of the shoulder

⚙️ Functions

✅ Stabilizes the shoulder joint
✅ Keeps the humeral head centered in the glenoid cavity
✅ Assists in shoulder movements like abduction and rotation
✅ Provides dynamic stability during arm movements

⚠️ Clinical Importance

Rotator cuff injuries are very common and may include:

🔸 Rotator cuff tendinitis
🔸 Impingement syndrome
🔸 Partial or full thickness tear

Symptoms may include shoulder pain, weakness, limited range of motion, and difficulty lifting the arm.

Shoulder issues!? The shoulder is a complicated joint with multi-directional movement capabilities! We explore all the possibilities/ causes for restricted range of motion and pain. We often find trigger points or referred pain patterns, which when released bring relief to aching shoulders. A “not so fun” area to have worked on is the subscapularis. This is a hidden muscle that clients will often say, “i did not even know there was a muscle there!!!”.
Subscapularis pain causes deep, aching pain in the front of the shoulder, often referring to the back of the shoulder blade or down the arm, frequently caused by rotator cuff tears, tendinitis, or trigger points from overuse (especially in swimmers or pitchers or even from sitting at a desk all day!). Symptoms include restricted movement, weakness with internal rotation (e.g., reaching behind the back), and clicking/popping sounds.

A moment of satisfaction! I was on my way back to wash my hands yesterday and glanced to my left and this was my view. While it may not be remarkable, it just made my day! I could hear a pleasant murmur of conversation behind the closed door and I just had a moment of such pride in what we are doing at Focused Care. I have been drawn to help struggling people from my earliest days, wanting them to feel included and important. It has remained a core value throughout my career and I am SO SO BLESSED to have team of wonderful therapists who care so much about each and every client who walks or rolls through our doors.

Lift your head, unclench your jaw, get outside and take some deep breaths- feel better!

5 Strange (but true) Things that Influence how you Move!

🤯

1. Your vision (not just your feet)
Where your eyes look changes how your spine rotates, how weight shifts between hips, and even how your arches load. Try it: turn your head right while standing — notice how your right hip subtly accepts more weight.

Eyes → neck → ribs → pelvis → feet

2. Your breathing pattern
Mouth breathing, shallow chest breathing, or holding your breath quietly changes rib position — which alters pelvic tilt, glute access, and core timing.

Bad breath mechanics = altered movement mechanics.

3. Your jaw and tongue
Clenching your teeth or resting your tongue low changes neck tone and shoulder tension. That cascades downward into posture and gait.

Your bite literally affects your stride.

4. Emotional state (stress, urgency, fatigue)
When you’re stressed, your nervous system biases flexion and rigidity:
Shorter steps
Less arm swing
Stiffer hips
Reduced rotation

Your body moves differently when it feels unsafe — even if nothing “hurts.”

5. The surfaces you live on
Flat floors, cushioned shoes, chairs, and cars remove natural variability. Over time, your feet lose sensory input, hips lose rotation options, and your nervous system forgets how to adapt.

Modern convenience quietly reshapes movement.

There can be many reasons why someone is having pain in their low back, hip and/ or buttock regions. Part of the joy in being a body worker is that we are pain detectives, searching for the source of pain and how to best help ease it.
