With sound healing becoming more mainstream, there are many courses and classes popping up everywhere. Is there such a thing as valid and legal certification?
Why would you even need a certificate?
In a podcast interview earlier this week I was asked how does someone find a good teacher, a class or course that’s going to give you a good foundation in understanding sound healing/therapy so that you become a virtuous and skilled practitioner.
We all know anyone can buy the instruments and make them sound. Is a weekend course adequate? A week? Why is in-person more beneficial than only a virtual class? What are the teacher’s credentials, their education and how many years of practice, how many individual and group sessions have they given through the years? What is their lineage, i.e., who were their teachers and what is their education, experience and lineage? Will you learn about some basic music theory, trauma triggers and how to handle them, the basics of the human anatomy and the energy field, the foundational correct information about the instruments and their use throughout history, the myths and misinformation about chakras, specific frequencies, the precautions, and so much more such as the business practice, ethics and HIPAA/confidentiality laws. You get what you pay for. I’m thankful for discovering some of the best known and respected teachers who are second to none in this field. Of course, that was after a few classes by well-meaning but inadequately educated teachers decades ago. I had to unlearn some things!
There are those who will say just play by intuition and you don’t need any classes, and that people who give you a certificate do it for ego(theirs and yours). Perhaps for some. But please know that there are teachers including my teachers who are dedicated to teaching the facts, the truth, the essentials and beyond that make their students skilled and virtuous practitioners. This is called integrity. It makes all the difference in the quality of what you offer and how it affects the people you serve.
You get what you pay for. An investment in a quality sound healing/therapy education is so worth it. By the way, most Soundwise instructors are not only graduates of Soundwise School but all have the credentials and experience to teach their respective classes. And we’re all local except for some special event guests.
So, in turn I then pass on what I have learned from these true masters as well as my own 26 years of experience in serving thousands of clients both individually and in groups.
When I saw this comment in a post from Stella Porta on IG, I knew I had to share it.
She says it so well. See comments for more of her post about the “freebie culture” and entitlement.
Being generous and making a way for those who truly cannot afford my events or classes has always been a part of my practice. And there’s a balance to be had. I had a huge learning curve in being generous and giving too much so that I couldn’t pay myself for the work I was doing. Sacred Economics wants a fair and equitable playing field for us all. And I had to learn to include myself.
