We recently had the privilege of treating a remarkable 54-year-old woman, Tammi Brandley, at Lancaster Rehabilitation Hospital. After overcoming breast cancer and completing aggressive treatment, the effects of her treatment led to cardiomyopathy. In October 2022, she required an LVAD placement as a bridge to a future heart transplant. That moment came in June, when she successfully received her new heart.
Following surgery, she came to Lancaster Rehabilitation Hospital to regain her strength and independence. Upon admission, she needed assistance with basic mobility in and out of bed, could only walk short distances, and required maximum support for lower body dressing. She also hadnāt been able to enjoy a full shower for about 2 years due to her LVAD.
With just two weeks of intensive Physical and Occupational Therapy, her progress was extraordinary. Not only did she regain independence in walking and all activities of daily living, but she also celebrated a milestone she had long waited forāher first full shower in 2 years. She was discharged home fully independent, ready to continue her next chapter supported by her family and new heart.
We are extremely proud of Tammi, honored to be part of her journey, and wish her continued success!
