Our relationships with our bodies can be complicated. Our bodies hold our history, our ancestry, and the systems woven into our society. They can also provide us with invaluable information about our needs, boundaries and intuition. Curious to explore your relationship with your body?

My next 6-month weekly group begins May 3rd and aims to provide a space where we can explore how our bodies can be a powerful source of wisdom on our human journey.

Happy Winter Solstice ❄️

After some much needed time away from social media, I wanted to drop in to share with you a reflection practice (please excuse the typo in the graphic 🤷🏼‍♀️) that I revisit every Winter Solstice. Many years ago, I was originally taught this practice based on abhyasa and vairagya in the Yoga Sutras 1.12-1.16.

Abhyasa (translated as “committed practice”) is persistent effort in cultivating speech, thoughts, and actions that lead us towards and enables us to maintain sthitau, a steady sense of tranquility (or insert whatever word makes sense for you). Vairagya (translated as “non-attachment” or “surrender”) involves becoming aware of and letting go of the attachments and aversions that veil our truest Self.

Over the years, the way I sit with this practice has shifted. I often find that it helps bring me back to my center and connect with my values and what is most important to me in life. With the ever-present and constantly changes challenges this year has brought with it, I know that my personal needs with this reflection will include extra kindness, gentleness and patience. I encourage you to make it your own and explore what resonate with you.

To begin, find a place that nurtures self-reflection. Maybe with a candle or tea or a warm blanket.

Part One

In the past year, where did I place consistent effort that served me, and my community, wisely? What drew me away from a sense of steadiness (or center, peace, etc) within myself and how did this impact both me and my community?

List the actions, speech or thoughts which lead me towards a sense of steadiness in myself.

Tonight, my heart is heavy. Tomorrow, the work continues. Rest in Power RBG.

I don’t have anything to say about such a remarkable human that hasn’t been said. I cannot imagine being a person of such endless strength, resilience, and integrity, that the whole country mourns with all you are and were. And with a person who so deeply deserves her rest, I (we) are left with such unrest as we fear for what’s to come in her absence. Tonight we grieve, tomorrow we continue the work. I cannot lay down and say it’s over. I will be building and ready for what comes next. To anyone laying in their beds or home with their family knowing you just lost a hero, an icon, who fought until the bitter end for all of us marginalized, I see you. Feel your feelings.

Compassionate Touch: Vagal Hug

Taking a few moments to bring our hands to our own body can provide an invitation for pausing, tuning in and offering compassion for whatever we may be experiencing.

For times when I might feel big sensations or emotions, I often turn to the vagal hug. It can help to remind me that the container of my body can hold me during an emotional wave. Sometimes I might internally offer the reassurance that “I am held”.

To try this out, as always, make it your own. I like to start by rubbing my hands to bring warmth and energy to them. Then (the video will mirror you), place your right hand under your left armpit (next to your heart) and your left hand over your right arm.

As you explore the vagal hug, be curious about a spontaneous shift that might arise in your body, such as a sense of settling or increased awareness of the container of your body. Explore different words or phrases to accompany the touch.

When you feel a sense of completeness with the practice, pause and notice. What has shifted, even subtle?
