Happy Winter Solstice ❄️
After some much needed time away from social media, I wanted to drop in to share with you a reflection practice (please excuse the typo in the graphic 🤷🏼♀️) that I revisit every Winter Solstice. Many years ago, I was originally taught this practice based on abhyasa and vairagya in the Yoga Sutras 1.12-1.16.
Abhyasa (translated as “committed practice”) is persistent effort in cultivating speech, thoughts, and actions that lead us towards and enables us to maintain sthitau, a steady sense of tranquility (or insert whatever word makes sense for you). Vairagya (translated as “non-attachment” or “surrender”) involves becoming aware of and letting go of the attachments and aversions that veil our truest Self.
Over the years, the way I sit with this practice has shifted. I often find that it helps bring me back to my center and connect with my values and what is most important to me in life. With the ever-present and constantly changes challenges this year has brought with it, I know that my personal needs with this reflection will include extra kindness, gentleness and patience. I encourage you to make it your own and explore what resonate with you.
To begin, find a place that nurtures self-reflection. Maybe with a candle or tea or a warm blanket.
Part One
In the past year, where did I place consistent effort that served me, and my community, wisely? What drew me away from a sense of steadiness (or center, peace, etc) within myself and how did this impact both me and my community?
List the actions, speech or thoughts which lead me towards a sense of steadiness in myself.
