Cerebral Palsy looks incredibly different from person to person, with each individual reaching a different level of mobility and communication.

This is why our individualized style of care is so important to our clients with CP: Through therapy and skill-building, we help them make changes where they can, and through adaptations, we change their environment when needed.

This CP Month, we hope you’re celebrating your unique, unstoppable self, just like we do.

This , we celebrate women with intellectual and developmental disabilities and advocate for their health and wellness.

Did you know women with disabilities have lower education and job rates than men with disabilities? And health-wise, they’re less likely to be recommended for important screenings when compared to women without disabilities.

We’re proud to be a part of closing this gap by helping our clients live their best healthy and fulfilled lives, no matter their gender.

Some of history’s greatest disability advocates have been women!

Judith Heumann, often called the "Mother of the Disability Rights Movement," led the historic 504 Sit-in that culminated in the first federal civil rights legislation for people with disabilities.

Eunice Kennedy Shriver created the Special Olympics after seeing how sports helped people with disabilities gain confidence.

We’re thankful for the women who continue to devote their work to helping people with disabilities, opening new doors, and creating new opportunities.

The special needs that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities have are often just human needs that require a different approach to fulfill.

The need for a home may look like community living with continuous support.

The need for independence may look like personal medication management with regular check-ins from support staff.

The need for social connection may look like day programs with provided transportation.

At Community Living, we help our clients meet their needs in a way that works for them!

Reading is often seen as a solitary activity, but research shows it can actually bring us together by increasing our social awareness!

For Read Across America Day, here are some books that can enhance our understanding of people with disabilities:

📚 "Sitting Pretty" by Rebekah Taussig: Through a series of personal essays, Taussig shares what it’s actually like to navigate a world centered around people without disabilities: from housing to media.

📚 "Out of My Mind" by Sharon M. Draper: This novel follows Melody, a brilliant girl with cerebral palsy who cannot speak or walk, as she fights to prove how much she truly knows.

📚 "Demystifying Disability" by Emily Ladau: This is a friendly, actionable guide that breaks down how to be a better ally through education and action.

One of the biggest isolating factors for our clients is the mismatch between their disability and their environment.

If we change their surroundings, we open up our world.

For wheelchair users, accessibility is often measured in inches:

• 36 inches of space is needed for a pathway to be accessible
• 48 inches is the maximum height wheelchair users can typically reach
• Even a half-inch gap at a threshold can cause access problems

These small but thoughtful changes can have a massive impact!

Marquitta says that Black History Month is "about honoring the strength, courage and hope that live in our communities every single day" — strength that can be found in her own story.

"As an African American woman raised in the inner city of Chicago, I learned early how to keep moving forward, even when life felt hard," she says. "I saw what resilience looks like in families, in neighbors, and in people who refuse to give up. At just 17 years old, I joined the United States Air Force. I stepped into a new world of opportunity, carrying my roots, my culture, and my determination with me. For more than 20 years, I have dedicated my life to serving others and supporting the people around me, hoping to make a meaningful difference in the world."

Marquitta's background and the values it instilled in her make her the amazing and compassionate professional she is today, showing her that "every person deserves to be seen, heard, valued, and given the chance to live a life that reflects who they truly are."

Black History Month calls us to think, not only about the past, but also the impact that Black innovators have had on our world, writes Community Living team member Shadara Jones.

In addition to the work of Dr. James McCune Smith, Shadara also often thinks about contributions from other Black pioneers whose work created some of our most used inventions.

Every time she picks up her cell phone or checks who is calling, she remembers Dr. Henry T. Sampson, whose gamma-electrical cell technology advanced wireless communication, and Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson, whose telecommunications research led to caller ID.

"Black History Month reminds me that we are great innovators," Shadara says. "And that legacy continues."

ResCare Community Living

Who Are We? ResCare Maryland, doing business as VOCA Corporation of Maryland, is led by a new team of dedicated professionals with extensive experience supporting individuals with disABILITIES. We have worked throughout the continuum of care and have come together to provide optimal services. Our new team brings passion and dedication; while promoting quality over compliance. Members of the public are welcome to stop by and learn about our services. Our main office is located in Lanham, MD (Prince George’s County) and office hours are Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5pm.

Who We Serve? We provide 2 primary services- residential and personal supports. Our residential services are provided in home-like environments throughout Prince George’s County, Howard County, and Charles County. These homes have 24/7 staff support and include community integration activities, assistance with daily living and medication administration. For adults and youth who reside with their natural support system, such as parents or siblings, we offer companion-like services referred to as Personal Supports. These services are provided by our trained direct support professionals and are offered in the community. Activities are tailored to the individuals preference and may include skill development pertaining to budgeting, meal preparation, home maintenance, organization, and community integration. To ensure optimal health and safety standards are met, our services are closely monitored by Maryland’s Developmental Disabilities Administration and Board of Nursing; in addition to internal quality assurance programs such as Best In Class.

Why People Want To Work With Us? We operate under BrightSpring Health, a nationally known leader of human services whose vision is to be the best diversified health and human service provider in serving populations of various needs in our communities. With the support of BrightSpring Health, we have access to extensive staff development opportunities and the best quality assurance systems. We also strive for the LEGACY standards of Leadership (being servant leaders with integrity and accountability), Environment (providing transparency on a people-focused team), Get Going (knowing our business by working smart and efficient), Attitude (seeing the possibilities with a positive can-do approach), Communication (keeping everyone in the know), and You (being an example)! We also encourage our direct support professionals to strive for the STAR standards of Safekeepers (focusing on safety first), Trustworthy (earning the trust that is given to us), Attitude (seeing the possibilities with a positive can-do approach), Respectful (providing compassionate services), and Skilled (maintaining professionalism and skillset).
