April is Autism Acceptance Month.

Many individuals and families are navigating both ADHD and autism—and they’re not alone. Research suggests that a significant percentage of people with autism may also have ADHD.

Not long ago, a dual diagnosis wasn’t even considered possible. But for many families, that didn’t match what they were living every day.

These are two separate conditions that can co-occur—and recognizing both can lead to better understanding and support.

As one adult shares, spending can be a way to seek relief, stimulation, or reward. And once you understand that, the conversation shifts—from self-blame to building systems that actually work.

With insight from David Goodman, MD, a CHADD spokesperson, and Christine Hargrove, PhD, a contributor to CHADD’s Attention magazine, this article explores why ADHD can make money management harder—and what helps.

Does it ever feel like your child settles a little after time outside? You might be onto something. Research shows that even 20 minutes in green spaces—like parks or tree-lined areas—can help improve attention and reduce ADHD symptoms.

🌿 It’s not a cure. But it is accessible, low-cost, and something many kids naturally enjoy.

Research is suggesting that time in nature can help ease “attentional fatigue”—that worn-out feeling that makes it hard to focus. Sometimes, support looks like stepping outside.
