Hospice of Lansing Breaks Ground on Expansion to Increase Access to End-of-Life Care
Only Lansing-based hospice with Medicare 5-star rating expands to serve more families.
LANSING, Mich. - Hospice of Lansing & Stoneleigh Residence broke ground today, launching a transformative expansion designed to meet the growing need for compassionate, residential end-of-life care in mid-Michigan. Participating in the ceremony were staff, board members, capital campaign committee members, Mayor Andy Schor, Anna Cool - representative from Governor Whitmer, Michael Flory and his staff at Custom Built Design & Remodeling.
The project advances the organizationโs $4million Building on Our Promise campaign to expand Stoneleigh Residence, the regionโs only independent, nonprofit licensed hospice residence, increasing access for families who need specialized, around-the-clock care in a home-like setting.
Launched publicly in January 2026, the campaign funds a 6,034-square-foot expansion that will increase residential capacity, enhance family spaces and ensure a modern, patient-centered environment for future generations.
With $2.2 million already secured during the campaignโs quiet phase, Hospice of Lansing is moving decisively to address a critical gap: too many families in the region currently face limited options for high-quality residential hospice care.
โBreaking ground on this expansion is both a celebration and a commitment,โ said Heather Vida, executive director of Hospice of Lansing & Stoneleigh Residence. โFor years, we have had to turn away families because we simply did not have enough space. This project brings us one step closer to ensuring more families experience the comfort, dignity and peace that define Stoneleigh Residence.โ
The expansion will increase Stoneleigh Residenceโs capacity from eight to twelve private suites, representing a 50% increase, while enhancing the care environment with a dedicated meditation and reflection space, expanded family gathering areas, updated patient-centered interiors and infrastructure improvements that support future care delivery.
Designed in partnership with Custom Built Design & Remodel, the project reflects direct input from families, staff, caregivers and community supporters to ensure the space meets real community needs.
โStoneleigh is more than a facility โ itโs a place where families can focus on being together,โ said Kate Moss, campaign co-chair and board president. โThis milestone represents hope for families who will rely on this level of care in the future.โ
Demand for hospice services continues to rise as the population ages, yet residential hospice capacity remains limited across mid-Michigan. This expansion enables Hospice of Lansing to increase local access to specialized end-of-life care, reduce the need for families to seek care outside the region and provide a nonprofit alternative focused entirely on patient dignity and comfort.
โBecause of my husband Mattโs experience, I understand just how meaningful hospice care can be for a family. Stoneleigh Residence represents the very best of that care โ compassionate, personal and centered on dignity,โ said Penny Davis Spehar, campaign co-chair. โThis expansion is about ensuring more families in our community have access to that experience in their time of need.โ
As the regionโs longest-serving hospice provider and the only Lansing-based hospice to earn a Medicare 5-star rating, Hospice of Lansing continues to lead with a patient-first model rooted in compassion, quality and community trust.
