Move over ghouls and goblins — this is what frightens us!
These are just a few of the scariest dental “hacks” that people try and then share on social media.
We have one word of advice: don’t (okay, it’s really two words). We beg you, please do not try any of these or anything else that seems sus.
👻 Filing teeth at home: Using a nail file or abrasive tools to reshape teeth can cause irreversible damage to the enamel, leading to sensitivity, decay, fractures, and potentially tooth loss. Enamel doesn't regenerate once it's worn away.
👻 DIY orthodontics (DIY braces): Attempting to straighten teeth using rubber bands, wires, or other household items can be extremely dangerous. It can damage tooth roots, gums, and bone, cause teeth to shift unpredictably, and may lead to tooth loss or infections.
👻 Using lemons or other acids for teeth whitening: Lemon juice and other acidic substances can erode tooth enamel, the protective outer layer, leading to increased sensitivity, decay, and potentially yellowed teeth in the long run.
👻 Charcoal toothpaste: While charcoal can remove surface stains, its abrasive nature can damage tooth enamel, increase sensitivity, and may not offer true whitening benefits.
👻 Using superglue for dental repairs or attaching tooth gems: Superglue is toxic and can cause serious damage to teeth and gums, along with potential health complications if ingested.
👻 Chewing hard "fitness gum": This trend claims to define the jawline but can cause strain on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and wear down teeth over time.
👻 Swishing hydrogen peroxide as a mouthwash or for whitening: High concentrations of hydrogen peroxide can irritate gums, cause chemical burns, and lead to heightened sensitivity.
👻 Using household cleaning products for whitening: This is extremely dangerous and can cause severe damage to enamel and overall health due to the toxic chemicals present.
👻 Making prosthetic teeth with art supplies: Using non-food-safe materials such as InstaMorph beads to repair or replace teeth can pose choking hazards and further dental complications.
