Did you know that nearly 20% of fireworks injuries are eye injuries? Here are some quick tips to keep you and your family safe this summer:

🔹Be sure other people are out of range before lighting fireworks
🔹Don't let kids play with or around fireworks (including sparklers!)
🔹Never touch unexploded fireworks
🔹Set off fireworks outdoors in a clear area, away from houses, dry leaves, or grass and other flammable material
🔹Always have a bucket of water nearby for emergencies.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology suggests that adults have a complete eye exam every 1-2 years. You may also need an eye exam if you are experiencing any of the following:

Can hot weather affect contacts? While it's a myth that your contacts can melt in your eyes in the heat, it's still important to take care of your eyes in the summertime:

• take your contacts out or wear goggles in the pool
• wear UV protected contact lenses or polarized sunglasses
• properly clean and store your contact lenses to minimize infection
• give your eyes a break from your contacts at night

Take a break from scrolling to give your glasses a good clean!
• Wash your hands with soap and water thoroughly before handling your glasses
• Run warm water over your frames and lenses
• Use a mild anti-bacterial or dishwashing liquid soap and lather your glasses for 20 seconds or more
• Rinse with warm water and let your glasses either air dry or dry with a clean microfiber cloth

Are summer allergies affecting your eyes? Here are some tips to relieve itchiness and irritation:

• Place a cold compress over your eyes to soothe discomfort
• Hands off! Remove your contacts and don't rub your eyes
• Use artificial tears or lubricating drops to flush out irritants
