Dozens of area seniors and caregivers kicked off American Heart Month today with a vital education session on atrial fibrillation, the most common heart rhythm disorder.
The free event, part of the University of Michigan Health-Sparrow Senior Health Series presented by Burcham Hills, was held at the Michigan Athletic Club and featured UM Health-Sparrow electrophysiologist Ali Sheikh, D.O.

“Knowledge is the first line of defense in heart health,” Sheikh said. “Understanding AFib empowers seniors and their families to have informed conversations with their doctors, which can lead to better outcomes. It’s about taking control.”

The session, “Let’s Talk about AFib,” equipped attendees with knowledge to recognize symptoms, understand risks and explore treatment options. Key symptoms of AFib include fluttering, rapid or irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, dizziness, fatigue and chest pain. The event underscored the importance of the topic for older adults, as atrial fibrillation is a leading cause of stroke, and its risk increases significantly with age. The condition also increases the risk of heart failure and other heart-related complications.

Attendees participated in a lively question-and-answer session following the presentation, engaging directly with Sheikh on topics ranging from medication to lifestyle modifications. The event also included a healthy meal.

The Senior Health Series addresses prevalent health concerns through free, bi-monthly community education presentations for adults 55+ and their caregivers. The series aims to positively influence health behaviors by connecting the community with experts from UM Health-Sparrow.

This Heart Month, we are proud to announce the recent success of two innovative cardiac procedures at University of Michigan Health-Sparrow thanks to the combined efforts of University of Michigan Health experts from Lansing and Ann Arbor.

Medical teams performed two EVOQUE transcatheter valve replacement procedures for treatment of severe tricuspid regurgitation, also known as a “leaky valve.” In such patients, the tricuspid valve does not close properly, placing strain on the heart and leading to symptoms such as shortness of breath and fatigue.

During this procedure, a small catheter is placed in the groin without having to perform open-heart surgery. The procedures were performed by Nam Cho, D.O., a UM Health-Sparrow cardiologist and part of the Heart and Vascular structural heart team, with support from Daniel Menees, M.D., an interventional cardiologist at the Frankel Cardiovascular Center. This partnership highlights the value of U-M Health’s development of cardiovascular services at UM Health-Sparrow, where clinical teams share best practices to ensure care remains close to home.

Our Story

As Mid-Michigan’s premier healthcare organization, Sparrow offers over 115 sites of care. While Sparrow Hospital and Sparrow Specialty Hospital have been a cornerstone of Lansing’s Michigan Avenue corridor for more than a century, Sparrow’s Community Hospitals — Sparrow Carson, Sparrow Clinton, Sparrow Eaton and Sparrow Ionia — form anchors for the health system throughout the region. In 2017, the community joined in the dedication of the new Herbert-Herman Cancer Center, a state-of-the-art cancer center that further elevates the world-class treatment offered by Sparrow.

Sparrow is affiliated with Michigan State University’s three human health colleges and with Michigan Medicine through the Sparrow Children’s Center.

Sparrow is the largest private employer in Greater Lansing, and includes Physicians Health Plan, Sparrow Care Network, and Sparrow Medical Group. Sparrow Laboratories ranks in the top 25 laboratories in the nation in the number of procedures performed — more than 9 million procedures annually – and has been a national leader in testing for Coronavirus.

The Sparrow family of facilities also includes East Lansing-based Michigan Athletic Club, the only hospital-based health club in Mid-Michigan, and Charlotte-based AL!VE, an experience-based destination health park.
