The AAP is suing the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) after seven federal grants to the Academy totaling nearly $12 million were abruptly cut, an action the lawsuit calls retaliation for the AAP’s criticism of government measures that threaten the health of children.

“Allowing the government to determine which patient groups deserve care sets a dangerous precedent, and children and families will bear the consequences,” said Dr. Susan Kressly, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

US Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and other health officials said Thursday that the federal government will block hospitals and doctors from providing transgender care to children, saying, “this is not medicine, it is malpractice.”
