Wonder why it is SO hard to lose weight - especially after a certain age?
The answer is often due to Metabolic Syndrome. If you've been around our Medical Weight Loss circle at all, you may be hearing this term a lot. That's because close to 39% of Americans have some degree of metabolic syndrome.
Metabolic Syndrome is defined by having at least 3 out of the 5 traits below. But here's what is really wild - most people develop the 5 criteria by unhealthy diets and lack of strenuous exercise, but as metabolic syndrome develops it worsens ITSELF.
Metabolic syndrome develops due to poor lifestyle choices, but then it compounds, picks up steam, and causes drastic hormonal shifts in the body (and not just your typical male/female hormones). This hormonal stress forces the body to store fat rather than burn it for energy, only compounding the problem more. This makes it harder and harder and harder to burn the fat as fuel and the constant state of metabolic disarray throws every single body system off.
This is why it is SO IMPORTANT to see a provider for your weight loss journey, and to have your bloodwork looked at regularly. Your degree of Metabolic Syndrome should be determined, as this plays a lot into how long a GLP-1/GLP will be required and what OTHER medications could further help you.
And lastly, this is why it is ALSO important to persistently and consistently be always pushing yourself to become more and more active - muscles suck up excess glucose like a sponge, and strenuous exercise lowers blood pressure levels over time.
