Your diaphragm, the breathing muscle, is attached to your rib cage. Your diaphragm and your pelvic floor are supposed to work together to manage the pressure in your abdomen.
If your ribs don't move well, the diaphragm tends to sit lower which puts more pressure on your internal organs like your bladder. If you have pressure on your bladder, you are more likely to leak urine.
So, what can cause the ribs not to move well? Well, in pregnancy, your ribs have to adjust to make room for that growing baby. Your ribs might not move well if you have ever had a broken rib or an injury to them. You also might also be holding your breath or shallow breathing, which would cause the lower ribs not to move.
In pelvic floor physical therapy at Awaken Pelvic Therapy, we will always look at your rib cage and how they move. Because we believe that you should get down to the reason WHY you are having symptoms, and sometimes, that means that we have to work on your rib cage to help you with your pelvic floor issues.
If you are interested in really getting down to WHY you have pelvic floor issues, come see us at Awaken Pelvic Therapy. We can help you get your life back. (810)656-9862
