Demand avoidance isn’t defiance, laziness, manipulation, or disrespect. It’s a response to a nervous system that is yelling – and yelling even louder as a parent isn’t going to help, but neither is giving in.

When we move from control to collaboration, we reduce resistance and increase trust, and that can make a big difference in keeping peace in our homes while maintaining reasonable expectations for participation.

Remember, the goal here isn’t to raise compliant kids; it’s to raise capable ones.

The groundhog saw his shadow today, so it's said we can expect six more weeks of winter, but we know that here in Michigan it will likely be more than that! ❄️

Groundhog Day has been celebrated in the USA since the 1800s, inspired by a German folk tradition that was adapted by the Pennsylvania Dutch: If the groundhog sees its shadow, winter sticks around; if not, spring is just around the corner.

Here at JTC, we’re embracing Michigan’s winter chill with patience and maybe a warm cup of cocoa!

We dedicated our Saturday to becoming better equipped to serve the families that count on Journey Therapy Center.
Community Mental Health offered us training sessions on Recipient Rights, Dignity and Respect, Cultural Competency, Person-Centered Planning, and more!

We also got training on using Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices, which is an evidence-based practice used by nonverbal children to communicate and interact with others, and we learned a lot about speech motor planning.

Training workshops like this are a big part of how we stay up to date on the latest and greatest ways to help the kids in our care achieve great things! We're grateful for the opportunity to learn, and to pass that on to our JTC families!
