This Black History Month, we are highlighting Black pioneers, clinicians, researchers, and advocates whose contributions have shaped the field of mental health. Throughout February, we are sharing spotlights on individuals whose work advanced research, improved treatment, and helped move mental health care toward greater equity and understanding.

This Black History Month, we honor Nedra Glover Tawwab, LCSW — a therapist, author, and mental health educator known for making relationship-focused mental health information accessible and practical.

Through her writing and social media presence, she shares tools on boundaries, self-worth, and emotional wellness, with a strong impact in Black communities and beyond. Her work empowers people to build healthier relationships and stronger connections with themselves and others.

We celebrate Nedra Glover Tawwab and the lasting impact of her work and we remain committed to advancing equitable, evidence-based mental health care for all.

Throughout February, we are sharing spotlights on individuals whose work advanced research, improved treatment, and helped move mental health care toward greater equity and understanding.

This Black History Month, we honor Alvin F. Poussaint, M.D. — a renowned psychiatrist, author, and civil rights–era activist whose work explored how racism and discrimination affect mental health.

Dr. Poussaint helped bring these conversations into mainstream cultural dialogue, highlighting the psychological impact of systemic injustice and the importance of culturally informed care. His legacy continues to shape conversations about equity, identity, and mental wellness.

We celebrate Dr. Poussaint and the lasting impact of his work and we remain committed to advancing equitable, evidence-based mental health care for all.

📘 : What is Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)?

Welcome to , a weekly series from Lapeer CMH where we break down different types of therapy, what they are, how they work, and who they can help.

This week: Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy is a short-term, goal-oriented approach that emphasizes solutions rather than problems. Instead of focusing on what isn’t working, SFBT helps people identify their strengths, successes, and practical steps toward positive change.

SFBT focuses on:
🎯 Goal setting – defining what a person wants to be different
✨ Strengths – building on existing skills and resources
🔍 Solutions – identifying what’s already working
📈 Progress – encouraging small, achievable steps forward

SFBT is often used to support people experiencing anxiety, depression, stress, relationship challenges, and life transitions. Its brief, focused nature makes it especially helpful for individuals who want practical tools and clear direction.

📝 Note: Some therapies in this series may not be offered at Lapeer CMH and are shared for educational purposes. Contact us to learn more about available services.

Throughout February, we are sharing spotlights on individuals whose work advanced research, improved treatment, and helped move mental health care toward greater equity and understanding.

This Black History Month, we honor Bebe Moore Campbell — an author, journalist, and mental health advocate who worked tirelessly to reduce stigma surrounding mental illness in Black communities.

She co-founded NAMI–Urban Los Angeles to improve access to culturally responsive mental health education and support. In recognition of her lasting impact, Congress designated Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month in her honor. Her legacy continues to inspire conversations about mental health, hope, and healing.

We celebrate Bebe Moore Campbell and the lasting impact of her work and we remain committed to advancing equitable, evidence-based mental health care for all.

Today is Random Acts of Kindness Day ✨
In a world where you can be anything, be kind.

Kindness matters more than we realize, especially for mental health. A small act, a kind word, or simply listening can help someone feel seen, supported, and a little less alone.

Remember that kindness counts when it is directed inward too. Be gentle with yourself today. 💙
