April is Occupational Therapy Month, and Doctors Hospital celebrates its occupational therapy team. Throughout April, the American Occupational Therapy Association recognizes occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants and students nationwide for their work helping clients and families lead fuller lives.

Occupational therapy is a client-centered health profession focused on promoting health and well-being through everyday activities. Its primary goal is to help individuals participate in daily life by improving their ability to perform necessary and meaningful tasks or by modifying activities or environments to support engagement.

At Doctors Hospital of Laredo, occupational therapists are dedicated to helping patients recovering from stroke, spinal cord injuries, joint replacements, amputations and other conditions achieve the highest possible level of function and independence so they can return to their communities. The hospital is proud to have the only certified hand therapist in Laredo, along with therapists certified in pelvic floor and lymphedema therapy.

We offer both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services. Inpatient services are provided at the main hospital, and outpatient rehabilitation services are available at the North Laredo Diagnostic and Therapy Center.

To schedule an assessment, contact the North Laredo Diagnostic and Therapy Center at 6801 McPherson Road, Suite 101, or call 956-721-0200. Hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Each April, Donate Life America leads National Donate Life Month, an observance that highlights the need for and importance of organ, eye and tissue donation. The month focuses on encouraging individuals to register as donors, honoring deceased and living donors, and celebrating the lives saved through transplantation. The generosity of donors and donor families makes these lifesaving gifts possible.

Doctors Hospital of Laredo is honored to support this cause. In collaboration with Donate Life America, the hospital is displaying a Donate Life flag throughout April.

During this week's program, donor mother Martha Keiser spoke about her daughter, Krizia, and heart‑recipient mother Rochelle Gonzalez shared the story of her son, Diego. Both were joined by family members. Karen Rodriguez, hospital and donor services coordinator with the Texas Organ Sharing Alliance, and Casandra R. Castro, hospital services and family aftercare specialist with the San Antonio Eye Bank, also presented data and statistics on organ, tissue and eye donation and registration.

“We are honored to raise a Donate Life flag to create public awareness about organ, eye and tissue donation,” said Amber Hernandez, chief nursing officer at Doctors Hospital of Laredo. “This flag honors and thanks all donors and donor families who have given hope through the gift of life.”

To register as an organ, eye and tissue donor, visit RegisterMe.org. Learn more about donation at DonateLife.net.
