Congratulations to Apprentices Rubi Fierros and Janie Izquierdo on graduating from Gateway Community Health Center’s Medical Assistant Apprenticeship Program.

Your hard work, dedication, and commitment to serving patients have led to an important milestone, and we are proud to celebrate this achievement with you.

We also extend our sincere appreciation to Preceptors Patricia Sandoval and Leslie Perez for their leadership, guidance, and support throughout Rubi and Janie’s journey. Your mentorship played an important role in helping shape the next generation of healthcare professionals. While Leslie was not able to attend the ceremony, her impact and contribution to this accomplishment are deeply appreciated.

A special thank you as well to Texas Association of Community Health Centers for supporting this effort across Texas FQHCs, including Gateway, and for helping create meaningful pathways into the medical field, specifically Amanda Doenges and Tierney Rivara for supporting our organization alongside the leadership of Executive Director, Jana Eubank.

Gateway’s Medical Assistant Apprenticeship Program provides more than 1,500 hours of on-the-job training and covers program costs for employees working toward becoming Certified Medical Assistants. This registered apprenticeship program through the U.S. Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship offers participants the opportunity to build skills, earn competitive wages and benefits, and pursue long-term careers in healthcare.

Gateway Community Health Center is grateful to the Laredo Morning Times for highlighting the important work being done to improve health in our community.

This month’s feature shines a spotlight on two of our outstanding leaders — Chief Medical Officer Dr. Mery J. Cortes and Chief Dental Officer Dr. Claudia Cavazos — who are helping lead Gateway’s mission to expand access to preventive care across Laredo and the surrounding region.

In recognition of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, Dr. Cortes shared how early detection and non-invasive screening options are helping save lives by making preventive care more accessible to our community.

At the same time, Dr. Cavazos and our incredible dental team were recognized for their dedication during Dental Assistants Recognition Week and National Dentist’s Day, highlighting the teamwork behind the healthy smiles of our patients.

At Gateway, we believe prevention, education, and access to care are the foundation of a healthier community, and we are proud of the healthcare professionals who work every day to make that vision a reality.
