Something runners & athletes commonly get is a mild paronychia (skin infection around the toenail) from friction, sweating, or pressure. Here’s a safe, general guide — but if you notice worsening pain, spreading redness, pus that keeps returning, fever, or if you have diabetes, you should seek medical care promptly.
✅ How to Treat a Mild Toenail Infection (Paronychia)
1. Warm salt-water soaks
2–3 times per day
Use warm (not hot) water + a teaspoon of salt
Soak the toe for 10–15 minutes
This helps reduce swelling and drain mild infection.
2. Keep the area clean and dry
Gently wash with soap and water
Dry thoroughly after bathing or running
Avoid tight socks or shoes
3. Apply an over-the-counter topical antibiotic
After soaks and drying, you can apply OTC ointments such as:
Neosporin
Polysporin
Then cover lightly with a clean bandage.
4. Reduce pressure on the toe
Avoid long runs for a day or two if possible
Wear shoes with a wide toe box
Ensure toenails are trimmed straight across to prevent digging into skin
5. If there’s mild swelling but no severe pain
A short course of anti-inflammatories (e.g., ibuprofen) can help with discomfort — only if you can safely take them.
