Around 6 months, many babies are ready to explore their first foods alongside breast milk or formula. Great starter options include iron-rich foods like puréed meats or lentils, single-ingredient vegetables (sweet potato, carrots, peas), fruits (banana, avocado, pear).

Introduce one food at a time, keep textures smooth, and watch for any reactions. Most importantly—have fun and follow your baby’s cues! If you have questions, we’re always here to help 👶✨

Do you already know and love Ruby? Have you been looking for her? Look no further! We are thrilled to welcome Ruby Barquist, CPNP, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, to the Little Steps Pediatrics family! 🎉🥳

Ruby is a dedicated Pediatric Nurse Practitioner who is passionate about providing evidence-based, compassionate care to children and their families. She is currently completing her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree, with doctoral work focused on promoting early childhood speech and language development through nightly reading routines. Her commitment to helping children thrive developmentally extends beyond physical health and into the foundations of communication and learning.

Before becoming an NP, Ruby proudly served in the military and gained diverse clinical experience in labor and delivery and the operating room. These roles strengthened her clinical skills and shaped her holistic, family-centered approach to pediatric care.

Known for her warm and approachable demeanor, Ruby values building strong relationships with families and creating a supportive, welcoming environment at every visit.

Using baby sign language is a great way to communicate with your baby before they can talk! Understanding what your baby wants can make parenting so much easier. On a recent episode of the Healthy Children podcast, Dr. Jennifer Shu, pediatrician and Medical Editor of HealthyChildren.org, recommends teaching your baby the signs for common phrases like “more,” “please” and “thank you” around six to nine months of age. Tune in wherever you get your podcasts.
