GABA: The Anti-Anxiety Neurotransmitter that Calms the Brain

·         It is estimated that 1/3 of all CNS neurons utilize GABA as their primary neurotransmitter.

·         GABA receptors are comprised of 5 protein subunits.

·         They are responsible for maintaining homeostasis

·         They do so by inhibiting and balancing the over-excitability of neurons

·         It is this over-excitability of neurons that is associated with anxiety and seizure disorders.

·         It is the GABA system that is being targeted by benzodiazepines and neurosteroids.

GABA-rich food sources:

Legumes-beans and peas

Rice

Spinach

Mushrooms

Chestnuts

Sweet Potato

Cruciferous vegetables: arugula, bok choi, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, broccoli.

Fermented foods- kefir, kimchi, tempe, yogurt with Bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus strains

Tea: oolong and white
