In honor of Black History Month, Genesis Hospice Care would like to shed light on a few African Americans who have contributed to the medical field. First, Jane Cooke Wright was an African American woman who graduated from Harvard Medical School. By the time she was 33, Dr. Wright took it upon herself to become the head of the Cancer Research Foundation, constructing a finer method of testing the impact of drugs on cancer cells. This has led to astonishing developments in chemotherapy. Another important figure is Otis Boykin, an inventor who attended Fisk University in 1941. His perseverance and fascination with electronics has helped with the development of the pacemaker, an electronic that is able to to identify patterns in oneβs heartbeat. The pacemaker has saved numerous lives. Finally, the last important figure is Dr. Kizzmekia S. Corbett. She was a paramount figure among her group for the development of the COVID-19 Moderna mRNA vaccine. We cannot thank Dr. Corbett enough for the countless lives she has saved during the pandemic. We here at Genesis Hospice are very appreciative of these key figures in society.
