Outgoing Program Director Dr. Thomas Swoboda treated our residents to a fancy steak dinner after ACEP in Philadelphia. Prior to moving to Las Vegas, Dr. Swoboda worked as an Assistant Professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin for 3 years, as Program Director of LSU Emergency Medicine Residency for 11 years, and Clinical Professor and Associate Dean at Upstate Medical University for 4 years.

Dr. Swoboda played a massive role in starting our program and served as Program Director from July 2020 - October 2023. He will be staying on as core faculty and hopes to be more involved in research and resident wellness!

Meet Dr. Christy Ortiga Reyes, MD. Christy graduated from UNLV, then attended medical school at the University of Science, Arts and Technology. Prior to becoming a Doctor, Christy worked as an RN for 19 years!

3️⃣ Fun Facts about Christy:
1. She can paint, resin, sculpt and sew 🎨
2. She loves hot pilates and barre 💪 and enjoys thrill rides 🎢 & haunted houses 👻
3. She is a dog handler. Her dog Wasabi has competed in local dog shows and won several times! 🐕

Meet Dr. Qasim Rahman, MD. Qasim graduated from Arizona State University and then attended medical school at the University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix.

3️⃣ Fun Facts:
*️⃣ He studied biomedical engineering and worked in the industry prior to medical school.
*️⃣ He completed 3 years of Radiology residency and made the switch to Emergency Medicine when he realized how awesome EM physicians are.
*️⃣ He is trying to become the next king of DIY home improvement projects.

Meet Dr. William Heidman, MD, PGY-1. William graduated from UNLV and then attended Tulane University School of Medicine.

3️⃣ Fun Facts:
He is a Las Vegas native and an avid Vegas Golden Knights fan! 🏒
He used to be a lifeguard for Las Vegas casinos while attending UNLV. 🏊‍♂️
He grows his own loofah sponges 🚿

Meet Dr. Jack Widman, DO, PGY-1. Jack graduated from Northern Arizona University and then attended medical school at Midwestern University.

3️⃣ Fun Facts:
He lived in Arizona all his life but worked as a ski instructor for four years in college. ⛷️
He joined the Air Force to pay for medical school. ✈️
He loves playing video games with his buddies and is a champ in Rocket League. 🚀

Huge shout out to Allegiant Airlines for hosting VHS residents and attendings for in-flight emergency simulations at their training facility in Las Vegas! We all had a wonderful time!

Introducing the VHS EM Residency Class of 2026! Our incoming intern class had their White Coat ceremony featuring Director of EMS Dr. Barnum, Program Director Dr. Swoboda, and our new program coordinator Janele Andia! Welcome all!
