Let’s talk cesarean sections!

A C-section, (or belly birth as i’ve learned others call it) is a surgery to deliver baby through the abdomen rather than vaginally. C-sections can occur due to urgent or emergent reasons, but are also elective and planned.

Recovery from a belly birth looks a bit different, but here’s are some essentials to help make healing easier and more comfortable.

What about all the in between? What about all the steps to that healthy mom and baby? As a society why don’t we care when moms come out of birth traumatized?

Saying “at least mom and baby are healthy” can be insensitive and invalidating when her birth didn’t go as planned. Emotions are a complicated thing, especially when you throw in hormonal shifts that come with postpartum. A mom can be thrilled to have her newborn in her arms and simultaneously feel like she is grieving her birth experience. One does not negate the other.

In fact, studies have shown a correlation between postpartum depression and birth trauma

We are falling short. To moms, to babies, to families.

So, how can we support women and understand their birth experiences better?

Happy international midwifery week!

Midwives hold a special place in my heart. After all, they are reason I’m in birth work today! I was 8 years old when I watched my little sister’s birth and learned about the incredible work of midwifery. Now I have the privilege to advocate and support mothers as a labor and delivery nurse, while also working along side midwives in the home birth setting. I am forever grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow under midwives!

- Doulas work with all types of births! I am here to support the birth plan YOU want! From natural to cesarean and everything in between.
- Doulas are not medical professionals and do not give medical advice or diagnose conditions. Instead, we offer educational resources and support
- Midwifes are health care professionals that provide medical care for mom and baby. Doulas provide emotional, physical, and educational support to mom and family.
- Doulas respect and work with doctors and hospitals! Our goal is to ensure you feel safe, comfortable, and supported!
- Doulas include your partner and family members! We provide support for them as well as guide them to be of help and comfort to you!
- Doulas equip you and your partner with the knowledge you need to speak for yourself!
