What a 1959 Royal Canadian Air Force training film gets right about modern wellbeing…
A Pilates student of mine, Suzanne Steele, PhD (Official War Artist in Afghanistan), recently shared a film on the 5BX Plan.
At the time, nearly a third of RCAF pilots were not fit to fly.
The solution?
5 exercises. 11 minutes. No equipment. Done daily.
It became one of the earliest global fitness movements.
What struck me most…
This wasn’t just about fitness.
It was about capacity.
The idea that consistent physical activity:
• Extends lifespan
• Builds resilience
• Supports mental performance
The movements feel familiar:
Forward fold, core work, back extension, push-ups, running intervals…
In many ways, they mirror the foundational movements we use in Pilates today.
Even Joseph Pilates emphasized:
• Strength + mobility + breath
• A vigorous warm-up
• Daily practice as a discipline
The deeper idea
A strong body creates capacity
for a stronger mind and a more present life.
Not intensity.
Not aesthetics.
But readiness.
Why this matters now
Leaders don’t lack information.
They lack capacity under pressure.
And yet, one of the most effective systems ever created was:
→ Simple
→ Consistent
→ Daily
If 11 minutes could prepare pilots to fly…
What could a daily practice do for how you lead?
Move. Reflect. Plan.
(The Achievable Plan™ was designed to help you build that rhythm.)
