Tips for Newborns with Tongue Ties-
A tongue tie, or ankyloglossia, occurs when the tissue connecting the tongue to the floor of the mouth (the frenulum) is shorter or tighter than usual. This can affect a newborn’s ability to latch, feed, and sometimes even breathe comfortably during feeding.
Feeding Support
Seek a lactation consultant: A certified lactation consultant can assess latch issues and provide personalized guidance for positioning and feeding techniques.
Try different feeding positions: Experiment with laid-back breastfeeding, football hold, or side-lying positions to find what works best for both baby and parent.
Use breast compressions: Gentle compressions can help increase milk flow and reduce frustration for the baby during feeding.
Paced bottle feeding: If bottle-feeding, use a slow-flow ni**le and paced feeding method to mimic breastfeeding rhythm and reduce swallowing difficulties.
If you have any other questions about tongue ties, please reach out to our lactation counselor or your midwife.
