If you still have that purple Benadryl bottle in your medicine cabinet, consider this your gentle nudge to let it go.
Benadryl used to feel like the go-to for everything: hives, allergies, bug bites, even helping kids sleep on a plane. But as we’ve learned more, we now know it’s not the safest, or most effective option for kids.
Because it crosses the blood–brain barrier, it can cause drowsiness, agitation, confusion, and even affect learning. And despite the side effects, it’s not stronger, it actually wears off faster, which leads to more frequent dosing and more issues.
Today, we reach for second-generation antihistamines like cetirizine (Zyrtec) or loratadine (Claritin). They last longer, have fewer side effects, and are safe for consistent use during allergy season, even for little ones.
