In Return to Life Through Contrology book, Joseph Pilates expands on the idea of circulation as the body’s life-giving flow—like a river moving through us. He connected movement, breath, and control (“Contrology,” his original name for Pilates) with keeping that internal river flowing freely, something he believed was essential for true health and vitality.
“Circulation is the river of life. As a river flows, so does the blood circulate throughout the body, carrying nourishment to every cell and removing waste… Contrology restores this vital flow, bringing renewed health and vitality.”
14 years ago, when I went to Boulder, Colorado to finish my Master’s at The Pilates Center, it was also my 30th birthday. I spent a full week there—staying in a small cabin tucked beside the mountains and a flowing river. Each day I went into the studio for my practice hours, then returned to the cabin and sat for hours by the water.
One afternoon, with my feet in the river, I was reading Return to Life. In that moment, I didn’t just understand his words—I felt them. I felt what he meant about creating a river inside your body. The flow, the energy, the connection. It wasn’t just theory anymore. It was alive in me.
