PSA: no this is not my wedding dress, but I have an important bridal topic I want to share with y’all! Throughout my engagement, friends/family/strangers have made many unwelcomed comments regarding my “bride bod” & quite frankly, I am OVER IT. Moreover, it won’t change unless I bring about some awareness while complaining (something I do well, like really well 😂). Anyway, some examples of the absurd assumptions people have made include:
- I must be “eating clean” (whatever that means 🙄) or that I am on a specific diet as part of wedding prep
- I didn’t get offered French fries or *insert “unhealthy” food here* because “she has a wedding dress to fit into” (I guess I should be happy bc it is finally a different reason beyond, “she doesn’t/can’t eat that bc she’s a dietitian” 😏)
- I was working out solely to get “in-shape” for my wedding day...
Let’s get something perfectly clear. Not every bride/human you meet is dieting or desiring a thinner body. Despite the commonality of dieting, there are individuals who do not & will not conform to diet culture. 👊🏼
Now, do I want to feel my best on my wedding day? Yes, of course, however; I strive for that every single day. Will I eat salads? Consistently, bc I love veggies & they physically make me feel GREAT. Will I say no to mac ‘n cheese? HELL NO. Mac ‘n cheese is a fav food of mine + it makes my taste buds happy. Should I only eat a few spoonfuls? Probably since I’m lactose intolerant lol, but not bc of kcals or fat grams. Will I exercise? You bet! As much as I desire bc moving my body is my favorite stress reliever & my body thanks me for it. But most importantly...remember that these are MY personal choices & MY business, just as it is for YOU! Don’t assume your disordered behaviors are automatically other people’s issues too. Personally, I am happy with my body + will be thrilled to see it in my wedding dress on my wedding day while marrying my best friend. I hope y’all love your body too!
Fellow brides/future brides, there is one thing I want you to remember: Get your dress altered to fit your body, don’t alter your body to fit into your dress.♥️
