Dementia is not a single disease, but a group of conditions that affect the brain and make it harder for a person to remember, think clearly, communicate, and take care of daily tasks.
Here’s a simple and clear explanation:
Dementia happens when brain cells are damaged. This damage affects memory, judgment, language, emotions, and behavior. It gets worse over time (progressive), meaning symptoms slowly increase.
Common symptoms:
Forgetting recent events or conversations.Trouble finding words
Getting confused about time or places
Mood changes (sadness, anger, anxiety)
Losing interest in eating, activities, or socializing. Difficulty doing daily tasks they used to do easily
Causes:
Alzheimer’s disease
Vascular dementia
Lewy body dementia
Frontotemporal dementia
What it doesn’t mean:
Dementia is not a normal part of aging.
People with dementia are still the same person inside, but their brain is struggling to process information.
How it affects families:
It can be very hard, because loved ones may change in ways that feel painful. They may forget things, lose appetite, or struggle to recognize people. But they still feel love, comfort, and care from those around them. If you find yourself in struggling this season call us for Respite Care, Short Term & Long Term Availability. 956-792-9506
