April is OT month. So this Therapy tip Tuesday is brought to you by our very own, Courtney!
Crawling over cushions isn’t just fun—it’s powerful for development!
When kids crawl over uneven, soft surfaces like cushions, they’re building core and upper body strength while also improving coordination and motor planning (figuring out how to move their body through space).
This kind of activity also provides rich proprioceptive input—the “body awareness” sense—which can help with regulation, focus, and calming the nervous system.
Why cushions specifically? They create an unpredictable, ever-changing surface that challenges balance, engages more muscles, and encourages problem-solving with every move.
Bonus: Crawling supports bilateral coordination (using both sides of the body together) and helps lay the foundation for skills dressing, handwriting, and classroom activities.
