Blood Work You Should Check Before Starting a GLP-1

GLP-1 medications influence insulin signaling, appetite regulation, gastric emptying, and overall metabolic demand. Because of these systemic effects, baseline blood work is essential before starting therapy. Labs provide objective insight into glucose control, insulin resistance, liver and kidney function, thyroid status, inflammation, and nutrient stores. Without this data, important contributors to weight gain, fatigue, or metabolic dysfunction may go unrecognized.

Baseline testing also establishes a reference point for safety monitoring. Changes in kidney function, liver enzymes, electrolytes, or blood glucose can occur over time, and having pre-treatment values allows for appropriate interpretation. Monitoring helps distinguish medication-related changes from pre-existing conditions and ensures that treatment remains medically appropriate as weight and metabolic markers shift.

In addition, blood work can identify deficiencies that may worsen with appetite suppression, including iron, vitamin B12, vitamin D, and protein status. Addressing these proactively reduces the risk of fatigue, hair loss, muscle loss, and weakness during treatment. GLP-1 medications are most effective and safest when used within a comprehensive, data-driven care plan rather than in isolation.

Women have been told for decades that testosterone is a “male hormone.”
That myth has quietly undermined women’s health for generations.

Testosterone isn’t new.
And it isn’t a bodybuilding drug.

It’s a human hormone and across a woman’s lifespan, testosterone is actually the most abundant s*x hormone she produces.

Long before menopause, levels begin to decline.
And when they do, women don’t just experience a drop in libido.

They lose:
• muscle mass
• bone density
• metabolic flexibility
• cellular energy production
• mental clarity
• physical resilience

This is why rates of sarcopenia, osteoporosis, insulin resistance, and frailty surge after 40.

A 2025 study published in JAMA Network Open found that women given a female-appropriate dose of testosterone were 50% less likely to require a cane or walker six months after a hip fracture.

Read that again.

That isn’t about aesthetics.
That’s about independence.

Testosterone has been studied since 1935.
The problem isn’t a lack of evidence — it’s a lack of education.

In our program, testosterone is often one of the first hormones we evaluate for women over 40 (when clinically appropriate), because protecting muscle, bone, brain signaling, and mitochondrial function changes everything downstream.

And no — hormones alone don’t solve everything.

That’s why we combine:
• comprehensive blood work (real labs, not surface-level panels)
• gut and inflammation testing
• anti-inflammatory, metabolically supportive nutrition
• progressive strength training
• medically supervised hormone replacement
• ongoing coaching and accountability

This isn’t about chasing a number on the scale.
It’s about protecting your brain, bones, heart, and long-term quality of life.

Before automatically turning to a statin, it’s essential to understand why cholesterol changes during perimenopause and what your lab results are actually telling you.

Perimenopause isn’t just a hormonal shift, it’s a metabolic transition as well.

When you address the underlying drivers first, cholesterol levels often improve on their own.

Rising cholesterol in perimenopause is not inevitable  and it is not something you simply have to accept.

Struggling with sleep isn’t just about rest, it’s often about food.

When you’re under-fueling, skipping meals, or riding blood sugar highs and crashes, your body stays in stress mode instead of rest mode.

Eating enough, and eating consistently, helps your nervous system feel safe enough to actually sleep.

If you are experiencing:
• Afternoon crashes
• Sugar cravings
• Irritability
• Sleep struggles
• Waking at 3 AM

Your cortisol may be out of balance.

Do you relate to these symptoms:

Tired but wired, trouble falling asleep, waking at 3 AM, cravings that feel impossible to control, irritability, anxiety shifts, or feeling overwhelmed by things that never used to bother you.

These are some of the most common signs of hormone stress that I see in women in their forties and fifties. When cortisol is out of rhythm, your entire system works harder to keep you balanced. For many women, this does not show up as one clear symptom. It shows up as a slow build of feeling off, overstimulated, or like your body and mind are not syncing the way they used to.

Your body is not giving up. It is asking for steadiness, nourishment, and support. These symptoms are information that your hormones and nervous system need a different approach, not more pressure or pushing through.

If any of this sounds familiar, you are not alone. Midlife hormone changes are real, and they deserve to be understood.

Drop the symptoms you have noticed lately.

Hormone therapy in BRCA carriers has long been viewed with caution and fear.

A study presented in 2025 at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS) followed more than 1,300 women with BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations, the majority of whom entered menopause early due to preventive surgery.

Contrary to long-standing concerns, the study found that menopausal hormone therapy was not associated with an increased risk of breast cancer in this high-risk group. Certain hormone formulations showed no added risk, and estrogen-only therapy was actually linked to a lower risk of breast cancer.

This doesn’t suggest that hormone therapy is appropriate for everyone. It does, however, underscore the need for nuanced, evidence-based, and individualized discussions—rather than decisions driven by blanket fear.

While additional research is still needed, these findings represent an important step forward in improving menopause care for BRCA carriers.

Menopause isn’t just about declining hormones.

It’s about how your body adapts to a whole new rhythm. And one mineral quietly plays a starring role in how smooth (or rocky) that transition feels: magnesium.

What most women don’t realize?

Your magnesium needs go up during menopause… just when your body becomes less efficient at absorbing and holding onto it.

Are you taking magnesium daily?

Measuring FSH can give you a better picture of how much estradiol is actually reaching your cells. It is not perfect, but it is a much more useful measure than just looking at an estradiol level alone.

FSH helps show what your body is actually experiencing at the receptor level, which is what really matters for hormone function.

There’s a myth that if you don’t have a uterus, you don’t need progesterone. That is not true.

Progesterone does far more than protect the uterus. It supports your brain, bones, breasts, mood, metabolism, and sleep. Many women actually have estrogen dominance, where estrogen is too high relative to progesterone, and removing the uterus does nothing to fix that imbalance.

Synthetic progestins, like those in some IUDs or birth control, are not the same as natural progesterone. They don’t provide the same benefits and can contribute to fatigue, low libido, mood swings, and weight gain.

Micronized, bioidentical progesterone is key for overall health. It helps calm the nervous system, protect your bones and brain, and balance mood.

Too many women are missing out on this simple but powerful hormone. You deserve care that truly supports your body.
