1️⃣ Share your data
Insurance companies thrive on secrecy. Complete the APTA NY Payment Benchmarking Survey so lawmakers see how far NY rates have fallen behind inflation.

2️⃣ Support Fair Copay legislation
Patients should not pay specialist copays for visits that reimburse less than the copay itself. Email your State Senator via the APTA Action Center.

3️⃣ Report repricing schemes
Seeing out-of-network “repricing” without consent? Report every instance to the APTA NY Public Policy Committee.

4️⃣ Know your worth
A contract that doesn’t cover your cost of care is not a win. Negotiate. Use cost-of-living data. Walk away if needed.

A bad contract is worse than no contract.

We didn’t enter this profession to fight insurance companies, but here we are.

One clinic negotiating alone doesn’t move the needle. Thousands of NY PTs speaking together does.

The pendulum won’t swing back by staying quiet. It moves when data, advocacy, and pressure align.

This is about:
• Fair reimbursement
• Sustainable practices
• Patient access
• Respect for our license

And yes, it’s about survival.

Here’s the part that should make everyone uncomfortable.

In many NY plans, the patient copay ($60+) is equal to or higher than the insurance reimbursement.

That means:
• The insurer collects premiums
• Pays little to nothing for skilled care
• Shifts the full cost onto the patient

This isn’t cost-sharing. It’s cost-dumping.

And it puts patient access at risk, especially for those who need frequent rehab to function, work, or stay independent.

📍 New York

• Housing costs: 178% of national average
• Avg commercial reimbursement: $62–$75/visit

📍 Utah
• Cost of Living Index: 99.1

Same CPT codes. Same license. Same outcomes.

NY therapists are paid ~35% LESS while paying far more to operate.
If pay is “market-based,” the market is broken.
