The raven was still there.

Not closer.
Not farther.
Not altered in any way that mattered.

Time had moved—noticeably this time. The kind of passing that leaves no marker except a subtle shift in the body. A change in temperature along the arms. A tightening somewhere behind the ribs. The mind tried to count it. Minutes, maybe. Or something that only felt like minutes.

The raven did not react.

That was when the watching truly began.

Not of the bird—but of everything else.

A thought appeared, fully formed: It must mean something.
Another followed quickly behind it: I should understand this by now.
