💪 Protein…is Everywhere

From shakes and bars to cereals, now even Pop-Tarts, it feels like everything these days has a “protein” in it!

Protein is important for building muscle, supporting recovery, and keeping you full longer 🥩🌱, but according to nutrition experts from the Mayo Clinic and Harvard Health, most people already get enough protein through their regular diet. Too much can even put extra stress on your kidneys and liver over time.

And remember, not all protein is the same!

🥩 Animal-based proteins (like chicken, eggs, and fish) contain all essential amino acids.

🌱 Plant-based proteins (like beans, lentils, and quinoa) can be just as beneficial when mixed for variety, plus they’re full of fiber and nutrients!

⚖️ Balance is key. You probably don’t need a “protein Pop-Tart” to meet your goals, just a healthy mix of whole foods and smart choices.

🍎 Want help figuring out what’s right for you? River Valley Primary Care Services has a registered dietitian who can help you go over your nutrition goals and build a plan that fits your lifestyle!

💁November is National Diabetes Month!

Did you know diabetes happens when your body can’t use or make insulin properly, causing high blood sugar? It can develop at any age, and risk increases with age, family history, weight, or inactivity.

📊 Quick facts:

About 12% of adults in Arkansas have diabetes, higher than the national average.

Lifestyle matters: staying active, eating healthy, and regular check-ups can make a big difference.

Ask your provider about screening if you’re 45+, have risk factors, or haven’t checked your blood sugar recently.

Let’s use this month to raise awareness and take steps toward a healthier life! 💪

🚨 ZYN isn’t “just ni****ne” it’s a trend you need to know about.

First it was smoking, then vaping… now ZYN pouches. What they all have in common?
Addictive.
Bad for your health.
Marketed by the same big to***co companies (yes, the ones behind Marlboro).

We don’t fully know the long-term effects of ZYN, but ni****ne is still addictive and can impact your heart, brain, and gums. Just because it’s “discreet” or “cool” doesn’t mean it’s safe.

💬 Parents: Talk to your teens. Users: Need help quitting? We’re here for you. Your health comes first, don’t let trends put it at risk.

Men Need Twice as Much Exercise as Women to Reduce Heart Disease Risk? ❤️

A new study published in Nature Cardiovascular Research found that men need nearly twice as much exercise as women to achieve the same reduction in heart disease risk.

🏃‍♂️ Here’s what the research found:

Women who got about 250 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous exercise per week lowered their heart disease risk by 30%.

Men needed roughly 530 minutes per week, that’s nearly 9 hours, to see the same benefit.

Even with existing heart disease, women saw greater improvements in longevity from the same amount of exercise compared to men.

🧬 Why the difference?
Doctors believe it comes down to biology:

Women typically have higher estrogen levels, which can boost fat metabolism and cardiovascular efficiency during exercise.

They also tend to have more slow-twitch muscle fibers, allowing their bodies to use oxygen more effectively, a key factor in heart health.

Men, on the other hand, often have more fast-twitch muscles suited for quick bursts of power rather than long, sustained activity.

❤️‍🔥 The takeaway? Whether you’re a man or a woman, consistent movement matters. Aim for:

At least 150 minutes of heart-pumping exercise weekly (brisk walking, biking, swimming, etc.)

Add in strength training twice a week for extra heart and muscle health.

🚑 ER or Primary Care? Know Before You Go!

Did you know many health concerns can be treated by your Primary Care Provider instead of the Emergency Room?
Choosing your P*P first can save you time, money, and stress, and you’ll get care from someone who knows your health history.

👉 Common reasons to see your P*P instead of the ER:

🤧 Cold, flu, or allergies

👂 Earaches or sore throats

🔥 Minor cuts, burns, or rashes

💪 Back pain or joint pain

🚽 Stomach issues or urinary discomfort

💊 Prescription refills & routine care

🕒 Did you know?

Studies show that 20–40% of ER visits could actually be handled in a primary care or urgent care setting.
💵That’s a lot of people spending more time and money than necessary for issues like sore throats, minor infections, or medication refills.

🏥 When to use the ER:
If you experience chest pain, difficulty breathing, major injuries, uncontrolled bleeding, or anything life-threatening, go straight to the ER or call 911. 🚨

💳 We’re Medicare-friendly!
River Valley Primary Care Services proudly accepts Medicare and many insurance plans, and we also offer a Sliding Fee Discount Program for those who qualify, because everyone deserves affordable, compassionate care.

⏰ Call us or walk in during regular clinic hours, RVPCS is here for you and your family every step of the way.

🧠💡 What is Health Literacy and Why It Matters

Health literacy is your ability to find, understand, and use information to make decisions about your health.
Simply put, it’s knowing enough to take care of yourself and your family!

Why it matters:

People with strong health literacy are more likely to follow treatment plans correctly ✅

They understand medication instructions, screenings, and preventive care 🩺

They can spot reliable health information and avoid misinformation 🌐

Examples in everyday life:
1️⃣ Reading a prescription label correctly to take your medicine safely
2️⃣ Knowing which symptoms require a call to your provider versus a home remedy
3️⃣ Understanding nutrition labels to make healthier choices for your family

We’re here to help you understand your health and feel confident in your care. Don’t hesitate to ask questions, no question is too small! 💙

🌬️ Cold, Flu, and RSV Season Is Here! 🍂

Every fall and winter, we see a rise in coughs, fevers, and runny noses, and this year is expected to be a tough one. 🦠 Protect yourself and your loved ones with a few key steps:

💉 Get Vaccinated
Vaccines are your best defense against flu, COVID-19, and RSV. Even if you still catch the virus, vaccination greatly reduces the risk of serious illness or hospitalization.

🧼 Wash Hands & Clean Surfaces
Viruses spread easily through coughs, sneezes, and shared spaces. Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds and disinfect commonly touched surfaces often.

🏠 Stay Home When Sick
If you or a family member start feeling sick, get tested and take precautions to avoid spreading illness, especially around young children and older adults.
