Happy National Walking Day!

One of the simplest things we can do for our health is also one of the most powerful—walking. A regular walking routine supports heart health, strengthens muscles, reduces stress and so much more.

Small swaps make it easy: take the stairs, park a bit farther away or step outside for some fresh air after lunch. Lace up and take that first step.

How are you getting your steps in today?

Screening is the best way to catch colon cancer early. People should get screened starting at age 45, even if they feel healthy. Screening can find problems early, when treatment is easier and more effective. If colon cancer runs in your family, your doctor may suggest starting sooner.

There are a lot of myths about colon cancer screening. Knowing the facts can help you feel confident about your options. Talk with your doctor about which screening test and prep are right for you.

March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month.

Colon cancer is highly preventable when caught early, and screening is key. A colonoscopy can find problems before symptoms appear, when treatment is easiest and most effective.

Dr. David Ma, colorectal surgeon at Merrimack Health, says colonoscopies are safe, routine, and lifesaving.

Everyone 45 and older should be screened. If colon cancer runs in your family, your doctor might recommend starting earlier. You can also talk with your doctor about the screening and the prep needed for your colonoscopy.

PHYSICIAN MATCH DAY. Lawrence Family Medicine Residency (LFMR), based at Greater Lawrence Family Health Center, is proud to announce the successful match of 12 new resident physicians who will join the program as the Class of 2030.

Selected through the National Resident Matching Program, these incoming residents represent a diverse and highly accomplished group of medical graduates from institutions across the country. Beginning in June 2026, they will train in full spectrum family medicine while providing care to patients throughout Greater Lawrence and the Merrimack Valley.

LFMR is a community-based residency program with a longstanding commitment to training physicians to deliver compassionate, culturally responsive, and patient centered care. Residents care for individuals and families across the lifespan and gain experience in primary care, obstetrics, pediatrics, behavioral health, and care for medically underserved populations.

“Each Match Day is an exciting reminder of one of the primary strengths of our program, the people who make up our residents, faculty, and staff,” said Jennifer Somers, MD, Program Director of LFMR. “We welcome the Class of 2030 and look forward to learning and working alongside them as they continue their journey as physicians and future leaders in community health.”

Graduating 12 residents annually, LFMR plays a critical role in strengthening the primary care workforce in Massachusetts and beyond, with many graduates choosing to practice in community health centers and under resourced communities both at home in Lawrence and nationwide.

The Lawrence Family Medicine Residency is a nationally recognized, community-based training program sponsored by Greater Lawrence Family Health Center. For more than 30 years, LFMR has prepared family physicians to provide high quality care while advancing health equity and improving outcomes for patients in underserved communities. Recently, Merrimack Health celebrated 225 years of combined service to the Merrimack Valley, marking the 150th anniversary of Lawrence Hospital and the 75th anniversary of Methuen Hospital — and we commemorated the occasion by opening time capsules from both facilities.

The Lawrence Hospital capsule, originally sealed in 1976 during the nation's Bicentennial, contained a fascinating snapshot of medicine at the time which included an old pacemaker, surgical textbooks, patient menus, and more.

The Methuen Hospital capsule, sealed in 1982 amid hospital growth and expansion, held handwritten letters from employees offering personal reflections and heartfelt well-wishes to the future caregivers who would one day read their words.

These capsules are a powerful reminder that our work today stands on the shoulders of generations of dedicated caregivers who shared the same mission: to serve the Merrimack Valley with compassion, dignity, and respect. We are honored to carry forward the legacies of the caregivers, community members, and founding organizations who made these hospitals what they are today.
