Heart failure is one of the leading causes of hospitalization for older adults and it rarely presents alone — most people with heart failure have at least one other significant cardiovascular condition. Without the right support, living independently becomes a challenge and many end up back in the hospital.

Our evidence-based Heart Failure Empowerment Program helps patients manage symptoms at home with a personalized care plan, interdisciplinary support and close coordination with physicians. Learn more: https://hubs.li/Q03QDJmH0

Beacon Hospice celebrates Nurses appreciation week. We would like you to meet Marcey, one of our Nurses here at our care center. thank you Marcey for always being so caring and compassionate to all of your patients, families and team!
WHY HOSPICE? - I know this may sound cliche, but I truly feel, with all my heart and soul, that being a hospice nurse is what I have been called to do. I feel it's important, in life, to care for each other. Life is often difficult, even under the best of circumstances. So I feel we need to do what we can, what is within our power, to support each other, to make a difference in the lives of others. I had done other things before becoming a nurse, but never felt I was making a difference. There was no "connection" until I started caring for the elderly, the sick, and the dying. I've been caring for this population since I was 22yo...40 years! I've seen, and learned, soooo much about the needs of this most vulnerable population, and I have learned that I make a difference in their lives, and the lives of their loved ones, by the care, compassion and commitment I show to every person I care for. I am an avid patient advocate and believe everyone deserves to be appropriately cared for, protected, respected, and loved, without judgement or prejudice.
The word "death", for so many, is a very dark, very negative, ominous word that leaves loved ones feeling that THEIR life also "ends", after the patient passes. I believe, as hospice caregivers, we have the ability to change that feeling for those loved ones, by the way we care for our patients and their families.

BIGGEST CHALLENGE? - Not working. I don't like not being connected, not being aware of what's going on with my patients when I'm "off". I don't like loose ends, or unfinished work. Blanks. Any one who knows me, knows that if there's a blank...I HAVE TO fill it in!!

BIGGEST JOY? - When a family and/or patient tells me they have felt supported, that we have made a difference in their living, AND in their dying, because of the care, education, and support that myself, and our team, provided.

AFTER WORK WHAT MATTERS TO YOU? - Spending time with my family. My cat, Naughty. My home. I love to travel, but my favorite vacations are family vacations. Oh...and a leisurely, early morning, cup of coffee on the weekends.

Meet our new hospice liaison, Alison. Alison comes to us with a wealth of experience and knowledge. Welcome Alison!
Tell us a little bit about yourself....
1. I was grew up on my horse farm my parents built in Bradford, MA. I rode horses for fun but also competed at all the Morgan horse shows and the grand nationals in Oklahoma city. I am the youngest of 3 girls. I am married and have 3 children, one of which is my stepson.
I loved the ocean and grew up on my dads boats and in the winter we would go away snowmobiling and skiing. I have been in healthcare for 24 years, starting out as a certified nursing assistant. I previously worked as an admissions director for the past 20 years. This past year I put my scrubs back on and worked on the units as a CNA, taking care of the Covid patients and tried to be there at end of life with them, holding their hands telling them how much their families love them. What is your “WHY” Hospice?
I came to hospice as I wanted a change but also wanted to stay in healthcare. I always helped out with social services in my position, so I stayed connected with patients and families. I have recently had the opportunity to meet with patients and families in my previous role and were able to talk with them about hospice and the benefits it offers. I then had the opportunity to become a part of the team at Beacon and here I am 😊.
What is your biggest challenge and your biggest joy in your new role?
My biggest challenge right now is the unknown. I am a hands-on kinda gal so I can not wait until I can get out in the field and ride along with my peers to understand the daily routine and opportunities for outreach and connections. I hope my biggest joy will be helping patients and their families to focus on the quality of their life and to be comfortable.
What do you do when you are not at work? What matters to you?
4. Family matters the most to me. When I am not working I am tending to my children, rooting them on in all their sporting events. Being around my friends and making sure we are always having fun! We love the beach, pool, being on the boat, and skiing in the winter.

As we continue recognizing our amazing Social Workers, we would like to spotlight Del. Del has been with Beacon Hospice for ten years and is a valuable member of our team and has support and cared for many patients and families. She truly is the heart of Hospice
Why Hospice?
During the early years of the AIDS pandemic, I lost many friends, some of whom died at the Hospice of Mission Hill in Boston. The love, care, and support they were shown was unlike anything I had seen in my social work career at that point. I saw then that hospice recognizes and embraces the "whole" patient, including family and friends, and addresses the emotional and spiritual needs as well as physical.
Biggest Challenge:
That's easy - COVID-19!
Biggest joy?
Knowing that I made a difference at the end of someone's life.
What matters to me:
My family, friends and dogs, amateur photography, road trips, and time by the ocean.

March is Social Worker appreciation month. Our social workers are masters at identifying what matters most to our patients at end-of -life. They are knowledgeable about how to navigate the resources in our community to support our patients and families. They truly are the heart of hospice. Please meet Jackie who has been a part of our team for three years. Jackie's special focus is on supporting our families after their loved one has passed...
"My WHY for Hospice is that death is a universal human experience we don't often talk about as a society. There can be a lot of fear and myth around death and grief which prevent us from making our own decisions about our deaths or grief journeys. I want to help alleviate and combat these fears and myths to help people both live and die more authentically. I consider it an incredible privilege to support families and their loved ones at the end of life.
My biggest challenge is not being able to ease human suffering with a magic wand. My biggest joy is bearing witness to incredible human perseverance and love.
When I am not working I love hiking and spending time with family and friends! What matters to me is I have a beautiful baby niece whom I'm a new godmother to and that means the world to me. Spending time with my cats is probably one of my biggest forms of emotional and spiritual self-care. Kindness matters a great deal to me.
