Kansas Voice Center

Kansas Voice Center Since 1998, the Kansas Voice Center has been dedicated to the evaluation and treatment of clinical voice disorders. Dr. Lee A.

The voice center serves as a resource for anyone with a voice disorder as well as those who use their voice professionally. Reussner started the voice center in 1998 with the goal of providing exceptional patient oriented vocal care; today he is partnered by Jennifer M. Cannady, a certified Speech Pathologist, who shares this practice philosophy. We strive to provide state-of-the-art diagnosis and treatment of the vocal tract. The Kansas Voice Center is a division of Lawrence Otolaryngology Associates, Ear, Nose and Throat practice, and is devoted to the evaluation and treatment of clinical voice disorders and understanding of the processes of voice production. Our experience has taught us to treat each patient as an individual and a partner in his or her medical care. With the voice team’s combined skill and experience, we've helped thousands individuals find relief from a multitude of voice related conditions. It's one reason why many of our new patients are referred to us by our existing ones. The Kansas Voice Center is located inside the Lawrence Medical Plaza Building in Lawrence, Kansas. Twenty years ago the presidency transitioned from Bill Clinton to George W., a deadly earthquake struck India, the human genome sequence was revealed, the Academy award for best picture went to Gladiator, the Taliban regime in Afghanistan collapsed, and of course there were the devastating 9/11 terrorist attacks. Much has changed during this time though some struggles, such as the ones in Afghanistan, continue.

What does this have to do with the Kansas Voice Center? Twenty years ago is also when our speech pathologist, Jennifer Cannady, joined the Voice Center. She has helped to develop the Kansas Voice Center and has been instrumental in its growth. She has performed countless laryngeal stroboscopic exams and has worked with thousands of individuals including young children, professional singers, those with swallowing concerns and a variety of other issues. Laryngology and the treatment of voice disorders has seen great advances in the last 20 years and more procedures can now be done in the office with less invasive techniques. Jennifer is right in the middle of these changes and regularly participates in our busy laryngeal Botox clinic, vocal cord injections for paralysis, and new treatments for tracheal and airway narrowing (stenosis).

As an avid singer herself, Jennifer understands the concerns of singers and actors. She is also interested in helping new speech pathologists and regularly teaches a graduate level speech pathology course.
If you know Jennifer, you know that she is kind, caring, professional, and takes pride in her work. We are honored to work with her and many more individuals will benefit from her continuing care at the Kansas Voice Center. If you see her, please congratulate her on 20 wonderful years.

Thanks Jennifer!

This is a stressful time for singers and directors and many need to plan courses of action as soon as possible. I am actively working on gathering the most up-to-date information and will post videos as frequently as I can (every few days). We also need to realize that the information (and therefore decisions on how and when to sing) will change over time.

For those needing some preliminary information on singing now:

Can we sing with large groups now? Singing with groups indoors is likely a risky activity. Singing in smaller groups (2-10 or so) would be of lesser risk but not risk free.

Are there ways to sing more safely? None of these are ideal but here are some options.

1. Virtual choirs

2. Singing outside – almost certainly much safer than inside

3. If inside, stay with small numbers and work with building staff to make sure ventilation system has high air turnover or open windows where available. The larger the space and the more spread out people are, the better.

4. Continue to have individuals practice on their own.

5. Testing – Appropriate testing of individuals to confidently have rehearsals is not yet available. I will go into much more detail in the future.

6. Masks – I will discuss this more. Not ideal for singers but could lower risks to some degree.

7. Location – Certainly, some areas of the country have higher incidence of COVID-19 than others. This should be considered when contemplating singing groups.

8. Audiences/congregations – This complicates the picture and adds to the risk of spread. They are sharing some air with the performers. Some people in the audience will likely be at very high risk for serious viral complications. Again, outdoor performances are likely much safer than indoors.

There are many more questions to be answered and discussed. I will continue to post more detailed information through my video mini series and will also include considerations on how various testing and technology options may help rehearsals and performances in the future.
