Happy Thanksgiving!
As you make your way home for the holidays this year look for some hidden hints that your parents may need a little help.
When you hug them do they feel a little thinner?
(Check their food supply. Did you know that if you are over 60 you can CALL and place an instacart order and you donโt have to do it online?)
When they walk through the house are they picking up their feet and walking without a shuffle?
(Check for trip hazards like rugs with shaggy edges, cords, or clutter)
Ask them if they have had any falls.
(This isnโt something that they typically offer up in conversation.) Placing LED night lights that come on automatically in bedrooms, bathrooms, hallways, and kitchens can help them orient when they wake up to use the bathroom or get a drink.
Have they made an appointment with SHICK to make sure they have the best prescription plan for their medications?
Do you see medication bottles or bubble packs with medications not taken? (Did you know you can get pill boxes with an alarm to remind them?)
Do they still drive? (If so are they enrolled in Jayhawk Area Agency on Agingโs CHAMPSS program for discounted meals for seniors with NO INCOME RESTRICTIONS?)
Do they live alone? Do they have a Life Alert? They may seem like they are doing fine, but it takes one fall and not being able to get up that will leave them laying on the floor.
Do they have an EMERGENCY packet with all of their information? A place where medics have all of their information? Placing it on the side of fridge is a great place!
Are the registered with smart911.com ?
This is helpful if they call 911, the paramedics will have their health information uploaded to their tablet immediately and know how to enter the home and who to contact.
Do you have one parent taking care of the other? (Is it becoming too much for them?) Did you know there are small adjustments that you can make that make a BIG difference.
A lot can change with someone in a short time, so being on the look out and having conversations about it is beneficial so you can help them before an emergency happens.
Do you have private help coming in to assist and would like to utilize a software that allows you to read the care notes daily?
Do you need assistance with understanding or filing the claims for their long term care insurance?
