Dr. Shapiro, Dr. Gajera, our Nurse Practitioner Dee Vandegrift, and nurses Jackie and Stephanie stopped by SAVE, A Friend to Homeless Animals this week to drop off the generous donations collected from our amazing DVPA families.

Thank you to everyone who contributed, your kindness truly makes a difference.

Our reading team is getting books ready for next week’s kids. Reach Out and Read

Research shows that children who are read to regularly in infancy and toddlerhood have stronger language skills, larger vocabularies, and better school readiness later on. Studies also show that shared reading improves parent-child interaction, which plays a big role in early brain development.

You’re not teaching babies to read.
You’re building the foundation their brains use to learn.

Baby teeth can get cavities too. Fluoride helps by making the outer layer of the tooth harder, so it’s better protected from cavities.

One of the great preventive services we offer at DVPA is fluoride treatment starting at 9 months of age.

It’s quick, painless, and helps protect baby teeth early, even before your child begins regular dental visits.

Not sure if your child needs it? Ask us at your next visit.

A gentle reminder for parents of teens.

Social media is a big part of teens’ daily lives, but constant scrolling and comparison can quietly take a toll. Over the past decade, rates of anxiety and depression among teens have increased, and research suggests social media plays a role for many kids.

It’s helpful to remember, and to remind teens, that what they see online is often filtered, edited, or staged. It doesn’t reflect real life. A teen’s worth isn’t measured by likes, followers, or appearance.

Many families find it helpful to talk openly about how social media affects mood, confidence, and sleep, and to check in from time to time about what their teen is seeing online.

If you have concerns about your teen’s emotional well-being, our pediatric providers DVPA are always here as a resource.

Little immune systems are still learning, and toddlers are great at sharing germs especially in daycare or group settings. It’s normal for young children to have 8–12 viral illnesses a year, especially during fall and winter.

Colds can also seem “back-to-back” because viruses stack or symptoms overlap.

The good news? Each illness strengthens their immune system, and most are short-lived and resolve with rest, fluids, and time.

If your child’s illnesses seem unusually severe, frequent, or they’re not bouncing back as expected, call our office so we can help determine what’s normal and what deserves a closer look.

❄️ DVPA Winter Update

With the expected snowstorm coming, we wanted to remind families that we’re still here for you.

Even after hours, one of our providers is always on call if you need guidance. If your child becomes sick or you’re unsure what to do, please don’t hesitate to reach out, we can often help you decide next steps without an unnecessary trip out in bad weather.

Friendly Snow Day Reminder ❄️
After sledding and snowman duty, kids suddenly act like they’ve never eaten before. With several snow days possible, it’s smart to plan ahead for meals and snacks. You’ve been warned.

We’ll need to see how much snow we get overnight and into Sunday. By Monday morning, we’ll share any updates about office hours, including delayed openings if needed, through our phone system and social media.

What We’re Seeing Right Now
This is peak winter illness season, and we’re continuing to see a lot of flu and RSV, along with the usual winter colds. Many kids start with mild symptoms that can worsen over a day or two — especially fevers, cough, congestion, or breathing concerns in younger children.
If your child develops a fever, please call us. If flu is suspected, starting antiviral medication like Tamiflu within the first 48 hours can help shorten the illness, reduce how sick kids feel, and lower the risk of complications. Early evaluation really matters.

We offer same day sick appointments every day, even during busy winter weeks.

Winter Tips for Kids & Families
Cold weather brings a few extra challenges for kids. A few pediatric-specific reminders as we head into snowy days:
Dry air leads to dry noses — humidifiers and saline spray can help prevent nosebleeds
Cold air can trigger asthma symptoms — make sure inhalers are easy to access and not left in cold cars
Frequent handwashing plus winter weather dries out skin quickly — thick creams work great

A Quick Reminder About How to Reach Us
Our DVPA phone triage nurses are always available and know our patients well. If something comes up, call us first before heading to urgent care or the ER, we can often save you time and help decide next steps.
If your child is sick or you’re not sure whether they need to be seen, just give us a call, we’re here to help. You can also self schedule both sick and well visits through your patient portal.

Stay safe, warm, and dry, we’ll be here if you need us.
The DVPA Team.

RSV can cause serious illness in infants, especially those under 6 months. This season, families have extra protection available with the RSV immunization.

Babies can receive the RSV monoclonal antibody (nirsevimab), which helps reduce the risk of severe disease. Pregnant mothers may also receive a maternal RSV vaccine, which protects the baby after birth.

These RSV antibodies work much like the natural antibodies a mother passes to her baby during pregnancy offering protection before your baby’s own immune system is mature enough to fight infections on its own.

If you have questions about eligibility or scheduling RSV protection for your newborn or for you if you are expecting, call our office and we’ll walk you through the guidelines.
