Toddlers develop speech at different rates, but some signs may indicate the need for evaluation.
By around 2 years old, children should be combining words into simple 2-word sentences, and by 3 years old, most of what they say should be understandable to a stranger. Watch for limited vocabulary, not using gestures or sounds to communicate, or losing previously acquired words. Early identification and intervention can make a big difference in language development.
Our office can evaluate your child’s speech and provide an appropriate referral to a speech therapist or early intervention if needed.
Provider tip: Our NP Tracy Shore recommends reading to your toddler for 15 minutes per day to help boost vocabulary. Since toddlers have short attention spans, you can split this time into shorter reading sessions throughout the day.
