Louise Ora Logan, resident of Ewing Township, New Jersey, passed away at the age of 106 on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at home surrounded by her loving family. She was the youngest of 32 children.
Louise attended Virginia State University where she aspired to become a Physical Education Teacher. She had a lifelong love for health and wellness. In her later years she became an avid walker, which lead to her attending and often instructing her neighbors in exercise classes at church and community locations. Those close to Louise know that she incessantly ate an apple a day, believing that an apple a day would keep the doctor away. This theory is well proven by her longevity and the absence of medical conditions found in people half her age and younger.
After leaving Virginia, she moved to New York where she had an opportunity to work for Judge Jane Bolin, the first black woman to graduate from Yale Law School and later serve as a judge in the United States. Louise named her first child in her honor. On June 27, 1947, Louise and William (Billy) were married. While traveling with her spouse during his military career, she gave birth to her children in various locations, including Germany, where her youngest child, Donna, was born. She became a Girl Scout Leader there. Their travels led them back to New York, via Fort Hamilton. After her husband’s retirement from the military they settled in Deer Park, Long Island. She often hosted gatherings for family and friends where card games, such as Bid Whist, Spades, Poker and Pokeno were played. In fact, many of her children and grandchildren learned to play these games through her teaching.
Louise took great pride in being a stay-at-home mom to all of her children, whom fondly remember her delicious meals, particularly her fried fish, chicken, and rolls. She enjoyed making pear preserves, applesauce, and homemade ice cream. She took pride in baking birthday cakes, mouth-watering lemon meringue and apple pies without the use of a recipe. And, there is absolutely no way to forget her beloved Cinnamon Buns. At least one family member is still trying to perfect that recipe. Being close to becoming an empty nester, Louise took a job at the Deer Park Motor Inn as the head of housekeeping. Voting was a high priority for Louise, so it is easy to understand why she devoted time to Voter Registration and working the polls. There was a time when she actually had to pay a Poll Tax in order to cast her vote. That experience fast forwarded her to the day where she proudly had the opportunity to vote for the first Black American President, Barack Obama.
She was a devoted christian, taking her faith seriously and praying persistently. Her children believed she had a direct line with God through Jesus Christ. Louise also became active in the Beloved Community Bible Study. In Louise’s presence you could often hear her humming or singing. She became a member of the choir at Ascension Lutheran Church in Deer Park, as well as, the senior choir at Shiloh Baptist Church in Trenton, New Jersey, singing well into her 90s.
Louise decided to sell her house some twenty years ago and move to Lawrenceville, New Jersey to live with her daughter, Jane, where they became travel partners. Where Jane went Louise followed, from vacations to simple shopping trips.
Louise will be remembered as a genuine dog lover, designated driver for many children and neighbors, peanut lover, avid reader (often a book a week), sports fan, enjoying baseball, football, boxing, ice skating and gymnastics. She was also known as the enforcer of “Brutal Force”, which brings up memories for each of her grandchildren. She was often seen laughing and playing with her great-grandchildren and giving them rides on her walker. She shared stories about family and friends while we all laughed until the tears rolled down our faces.
Daughter of the late London and Anna Stewart Pettis, wife of the Late William Lee Logan Sr., mother of the late William Lee Logan Jr. (Janice) and Patrick Noel Logan (Roxanne). Survived by her children, Jane (Logan) Wyche, Anthony Logan (Gwen), Donna (Logan) Payne, her beloved grandchildren, Kathleen, Harvey III (Millie), Tara (David), Douglas Jr., Kristopher (Victoria), Lindsay, Brandon (Ryanne), Patrick Jr., Catrina (Adam), William, Jason, Aaron (Samantha), along with 22 great grandchildren, a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends and her guard dog Samson.
