This limited initial US experience suggests a need for immediate changes in obstetric clinical practice. Two of seven (28.6%) confirmed COVID-19-positive were asymptomatic upon admission, and these same two soon required ICU admission. Importantly, their care prior to COVID-19 diagnosis involved exposures to multiple health care workers (HCWs), all of whom lacked appropriate PPE. Surgical masks should also be provided for all team members on the inpatient service and for all patients presenting to labor units, and worn at all times; and N95 masks for all COVID-19 positive deliveries, whether vaginal or cesarean, as well as for those with unknown COVID-19 status until disease status can be determined through testing.

"Meanwhile, in line at Trader Joe’s, where I received a lot of unsolicited pregnancy advice, a woman told me that my purchase of cleaning supplies was spiritual—I was readying my home’s feng shui for a baby."

Nesting is a real thing. "Some pregnant people never feel compelled to nest, but the ones who do are operating on instinct." Read to learn more about the phenomenon.

Readying the home for a newborn “helps us feel prepared for a time in our life when there’s little we can do to prepare,” says one psychologist.

One woman shares her experience with prenatal depression: "I did not expect that being depressed during pregnancy could lead to wellness, but 10 days from this writing, when I meet my son, I’ll do so knowing that I’m as healthy as I’ve ever been in my life, with greater self-awareness, a firmer grip on my own coping skills, and a clearer voice with which to reach out."

For many people, pregnancy can be one of the most emotionally taxing experiences of their life.
