How is periodontal disease treated? Thorough removal of plaque and calculus by a dental hygienist!

We use hand and ultrasonic instruments to remove the hard deposits and bacteria from the teeth and gums. Once removed we use laser bacterial reduction therapy to get rid of the stubborn bacteria at the base of the periodontal pockets. Of course, good home care and regular 3 month maintenance cleanings is the best way to keep periodontal disease stable. 🤩

Continuing our periodontal disease series..

If the calculus (tarter) is not removed with proper home care or by your dental hygienist, the gingivitis will progress into periodontitis. This is when bone loss begins. Periodontitis is no longer reversible. It can only be stabilized.

If you’re seeing some of the signs and symptoms below.. it’s time to visit your dentist! 🦷

So what causes periodontal disease?

It all starts with plaque.. 🦷🦠

Eventually that plaque turns into calculus (tarter). That tarter begins to cause the gums to become diseased and inflamed. This is the first stage of gum disease - Gingivitis! Gingivitis is reversible with proper home care. 🤗

Other possible causes include: smoking/vaping, diabetes, hormonal changes (pregnancy, menopause).

Over 70% of the population? That seems like a crazy number! Periodontal disease is much more common than you’d think. 🤯
