Did you know?
As the holidays get closer and we gather to celebrate over delicious meals, here’s a great reminder from Pet Poison Helpline that some common food ingredients can be very toxic to our pets. Check out their page for more info 🐾

Onions and garlic are toxic to dogs and cats in every form. Raw, cooked, powdered, or dehydrated - all are dangerous.

These ingredients are found in many common dishes, including stuffing, gravy, casseroles, soups, and sauces. Even small amounts can cause serious health issues by damaging your pet's red blood cells.

Keep all onion and garlic-containing human foods safely out of reach, and remind family members not to share table scraps with your pets.

If your pet gets into these foods, call or chat with us at 800-213-6680. We're here 24/7 to help.

As the weather cools and the holidays approach, many families start planning for travel, gatherings, and cozy nights in. But for pets—especially seniors or those with arthritis—this time of year can bring new challenges. Colder temperatures, slippery floors, and disrupted routines can all aggravate joint pain and stiffness.

Just as we prepare our homes and bodies for winter, our pets benefit from the same thoughtful planning. Studies show that colder weather can increase joint stiffness and reduce mobility in arthritic people, and this likely happens in pets too. Healthy holidays start before the decorations go up :) A few small adjustments today—more traction, consistent movement, and proactive care—can make the winter months more joyful for you and your pet

Here are a few ways to start preparing now:
1) Keep them moving, gently: Regular, low-impact activity helps maintain joint mobility and muscle strength. Short, frequent walks and gentle play are better than one long outing. Think consistency over intensity.
2) Create a warm, slip-free zone: Hardwood or tile can be tough and downright dangerous on arthritic joints. Use rugs or yoga mats for traction and soft bedding away from drafts.
3) Stick to their pain management plan: Don’t skip medications during busy weeks. Continuity matters. If you notice any changes in comfort, please reach out. Arthritis pain “flares” are also common, so having a plan to manage the ups and downs of OA pain is important.
4) Watch the weight: Extra holiday treats add up fast (for all of us!). Even small weight gain can worsen arthritis symptoms by increasing joint load and general body inflammation.
5) Plan your vet visits ahead: Late fall / pre-holiday appointments fill quickly. Please see our previous post re: upcoming holiday closures and schedule any rechecks or prescription refills before holiday travel so your pet’s comfort stays on track all season.

🐾 It’s Animal Shelter Appreciation Week! 🐾
Did you know the first week of November is Animal Shelter Appreciation Week? This week is a time to celebrate the dedication of animal shelter staff and the volunteers who work tirelessly to care for animals in need.

Every day, our amazing team provides comfort, compassion, and quality care to each animal who comes through our doors — helping them heal, feel loved, and reunite with their owners or find their new homes! 💚

What many people don’t see is that this work can be heart-wrenching and difficult. Shelter staff face emotionally challenging situations with animals and their humans; many shelter/rescue staff experience compassion fatigue and burnout. In fact, research shows that shelter workers experience rates of su!cide comparable to first responders. Despite these challenges, they show up every day, with open hearts and endless dedication, to make the lives better for the animals in our care and our community. 🐾

This week - and all year long - you can join us in showing appreciation and support for your local shelter workers:

💙 Donate: Your contributions - whether funds, food, blankets, or cleaning supplies, help us give every animal the best possible care.👉 https://leadvilleco.ourcommunityconnect.com/login?returnUrl=%2Fmiscellaneous%2Fpayment

🐾 Volunteer: Lend a hand by walking dogs, cuddling kittens, cleaning kennels, or assisting with daily care.👉 https://petstablished.com/petlover/general_form/60551

🏠 Adopt or Foster: Open your heart and home to a pet in need — temporarily or "furever".👉 https://petstablished.com/adoption_form/58141/generic
👉 https://petstablished.com/foster_form/58144/generic

📣 Spread the Word: Share our posts, success stories, and adoptable pets to help us reach more loving homes.

💌 Say Thank You: A heartfelt note, comment, or simple “thank you” means the world to our hardworking staff and volunteers. 👂 We love seeing your notes of kindness in the comments 😊

🐕 Promote Responsible Pet Care:Encourage others to spay/neuter, microchip, and provide identification of their pets to keep more animals safe and out of shelters. Understand that some people are forced to surrender their pets and come to us in tears; provide them with compassion and sympathy.

Together, we can celebrate the compassion, care, and dedication that make our shelter community shine. Thank you for helping us make a difference for animals every day! 💙
